A bit of googling tells me that Tolkien was fairly upfront that mortals in the Undying Lands still die. Too lazy to hunt down my copy of the Silmarillion or Return of the King to verify. I seem to recall that one guy became immortal, but I think he may have been a half-elf anyway.
Im reading through the book "The real Middle Earth" by Brain Bates. Although he isn't a historian he conveys how much effort Tolkin put into the book and where he drew a lot of his inspiration from. Every time I read it I get struck with a warm feeling as this is part of my degree.
