Look up German Zoidberg. He sounds respectable.
  • I'm going to be heading over for a few weeks soon, quite possibly in time for new years. Any suggestions for what to do during shogatsu?
    1. Order good soba. Toshikoshi soba is a traditional symbol of long life.
    2. Go to a tiny shrine and get sweet sake
    3. Watch the sun come up in a group
    4. Watch the Red and White: All the popular singers square off against each other, Male vs. Female.

I remember watching the 13th floor dubbed. It was not on new years, though.
  • I know old thread is old, but just for reference, I have had good experience using a b-mobile data-only SIM card. They do 1, 3, 6+ mo. prepaid.
  • Where exactly did you get said SIM card? I really ought to pick one up since there's almost no free public wifi.

I didn't actually rent one when I was in Japan, but I know all the cell carriers had kiosks set up in the airport, and there were websites where you could reserve one in advance of your trip.

  • That's totally what I am going to do next time. The phone I got this go around from an American-based company was terrible. Airport AU or DoCoMo for me, PLZ.
  • When I was in Germany we just bought a German phone. They had a two week contract that was wicked cheap. Why still escapes me though.

    What is that green soda?

I've often times seen that drink in anime whenever the characters are in a cafe. The ice cream parfaits look delicious also.

Green soda is Melon Soda. It is fake honeydew flavored. Lots of candy and stuff in Japan has green melon flavor.
Also, the parfaits were delicious, but too much ice cream. We had such a big dinner later on, and if I not eaten huge ice cream for lunch then I could have had even more of the grilled chicken. HOWEVER! I regret nothing.
Also, I hate that I am always not hungry for three days after I go over there. Every time, I just feel like eating a slice of bread and drinking only water.

b-mobile has a few kiosks around tokyo, but for 1-month you need to do mail order.

I just used U300, but the new 1GB SIM is similarly priced & faster speed.

    BEEER!
I want Lavender soft cream! The sweet potato looks good too. The cafeteria at Nagoya had Rose and weird flavors like Miso and Brown Rice.

There's something in front of beer, i'm not sure what, but it's not nama... which is regular japanese beer. I'm terribly curious...
The second is actually a sweet almond jelly with a tofu-like consistency. one of my favorite desserts.
Between chestnut and pineapple I'm guessing momo (I see pichi on the side, also), which is peach.
Looks like the "something" potato is satsumaimo.. a purple kind of sweet potato/yam.
And the grape is kyoho "giant mountain" grapes (possibly the best grapes ever).

    I've never had hokkaido melon..

When i took a holiday in Izu, they had wasabi flavor. SO GOOD.

Those are those grapes that you peel! That's what they are called!
Annin dofu is a Chinese thing, right? And it is all jelly-jelly. You get it at the ramen shop.
