edited July 2012 in Everything Else
mendacity - Untruthfulness

I think I'll find this word useful when discussing politics.

I don't know that I will actually use it, but gimcrack is a lovely word that means showy but cheap, and I will endeavor to use it when applicable. Free Rice is a useful word-type site that I use with my students vocabulary. You'll probably want to skip to at least level 30 to get words you don't know though.

  • I learned how to sign Sysadmin in ASL, and I do tech support in a deaf college, does that count? :D
  • How does one write a particular sign? Or would you just write the English equivalent of it?

is it something along the lines of s-y-s-admin (letters & words)? or system-admin (two words)? my ASL teacher loved the fact the louisiana was sometimes spelled L-A in a manner similar to "shit" (the thumb of the L inside a fist, coming out into an A).
  • I believe "Sysadmin" is signed with a single upraised middle finger.

No no, that's just "Fuck you". If you want to sign Sysadmin, you also have to raise an eyebrow and adopt a pained or exasperated expression.
  • Oh man, now I'm so confused. Maybe all those people were just addressing me inappropriately as the system administrator.
  • I've been learning quite a few things from Crusader Kings II, (demesne, causa belli, primogeniture, etc) and I've actually had to ask my medievalist girlfriend with help on multiple occasions.

    Is that a thing?

Yep. Last year she went to England and decrypted some of these runes.

Was this something that had been hitherto undone, or was it for shits and giggles?
  • Tharn: to be frozen in place, usually in shock or terror. Deer in the headlights.

The former. They only found the gold recently.

Yep I am one. Its a historian that primarily specialises in Medieval history and the various aspects that it entails. Its an easy way of grouping a vague-ish time.

  • Poutinerie. This is a word that gives me much joy.
  • mellifluous - sweetly or smoothly flowing, or flowing with honey.
  • nugatory - of little or no consequence
