Let's Play Money Making Game: PAX East 2012

edited July 2012 in GeekNights

Games can make their money many ways, but how do these models affect, intentionally or not, the design choices of the game makers themselves? What about the players? Do you play a game differently depending on how you paid for it? Free to play, pay once, subscription, or silly hats, what do these different models mean to games at their core? Only ten rupees; hopefully you won't have to pay the door repair charge.

We presented this first at PAX East 2012.

  • Scott had a PAX Pox about this time. He held up well through this, but faded fast once we made it to Anime Boston. ;^)
  • I like all the Scrooge McDuck images.

I'm seriously considering trying to do a panel at the next PAX but something tells me that it would be more difficult to get that position at PAX as opposed to some other cons.

I also don't have an idea for one but that is why I'm considering it now.

PAX is tough. You basically have to be a professional in the field in some capacity. Look at the PAX East 2012 schedule. How many of those are run by anyone who isn't in the games industry, upper-end game journalism industry, or gaming academia?

    Yeah I figured as much.

I remember there always being a lot of industry professionals or some sort of gaming/nerdy celebrity but I wasn't sure if the try out a small amount of new people every year.

Also, related to the video, I'm curious if casino's somehow use player cards to track winnings to temporarily alter odds on slot machines.

I know that casinos do use sort of a meta gamble by telling you that "guaranteed these odds on all x machines" when most likely only one of x will actually have those odds.

  • I giggled a bit when we got to "Scott's game idea" in the video and it was referencing stuff discussed on the forum earlier.

It's much more efficient to have a little bit to work with and reuse it a whole bunch than to always come up with new shit you only use once and throw away.
  • We (Scott and I) have been talking about that game idea since long before there even was GeekNights. ;^)
  • You're bringing things from the internet into the real world! Chaos! Bedlam! Dogs breeding with cats!
  • I just recently picked up Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. Your use of that panel from it is doubly funny if one knows the very next panel.
  • Scrym - Doing any more "how to play game x" panels? Or is there no "table-top workshop" this time around?
  • Oh Hey it turns out that it wasn't planned from the jump overall
