GeekNights Monday- Paying for Stuff

  • I use BoA, but I've never got charged a fee because I'm not fucking stupid about my money. It's not hard to not get charged stupid fees.
When I was at RISD, I often had to buy supplies from their store (stuff like sheet metal, sheet plastics etc). They ring you up manually -- so once, instead of charging me 8.99, they charged me 89.99. Even though I caught it immediately and had them refund the transaction, the process had already been debited & overdrew me. Citizen's bank charged me 33$ for that, and 33$ each for two /previous/ transactions, refusing to refund the fees. So once that law passed, I opted out of overdraft "protection". And then later on, changed banks to Ally, because this wasn't the first time Citizens screwed me over. (The other time, they changed my checkings package & charged me $20/mo without notification.)
Yet another reason to always use a credit card, and not a debit card.
  • Also on the subject of weddings I've noticed a growing trend in getting cupcakes instead of getting actual cake. Actually at the last wedding I was at they had some sort of crazy cookie cake. Despite it being suspiciously stale it was actually really good.
  • I too use coin star and get Amazon dollars.
  • Ditto with using coinstar and getting Amazon.com dollars for stupid bullshit.
  • Yet another reason to always use a credit card, and not a debit card.
Agreed. Honestly though, I'm a little too disorganized at the moment.

As soon as I'm done paying off the more than $30K in unsecured debt I've got right now, I'll consider that strategy. :)
  • I'm down to $2K, just 2 more months! ^_^
  • Screw you I still have yet to make a dent in the mass of loans that are growing.

Here's some advice. Whatever you did to get all those debts in the first place, go back in time and don't do that. It worked for me!

Don't contract a debilitating chronic illness without insurance... check!!

You went back in time and un-went to college?

Anyway, I use Wells Fargo/Wachovia. Overall I feel positive about my experiences with them. Although lately I was tricked into upgrading my accounts and the lady said it was free with no fees, I just get more interest. Later I find out they've been taking money out of my savings every month bc I didn't follow the requirements that the lady lied about (but could be found in an obscure page in tiny print on the website). I had to set up an automatic withdrawal from my checking every month into savings to get the fee waived. Totally stupid, that money would've gone into my savings anyway. Technically my fault for being suckered and not finding the obscure fees page, as well as not checking my savings account often enough. Whatev.
  • And I bet those "better" interest rates are still shit, right? My "high yield" savings is 0.5% APR right now. >_>

Im getting a degree? How is that a bad thing?

  • Even my money market account basically pays out nothing.

Yep. Savings accounts of all types are basically just really secure shoeboxes and nothing else.

Yeah they had something like this for me and at the time it was sorta worth it because it allowed me to pay for my power at college without paying an extra $5. Last time I went in I canceled it because it was no longer free if you had the automatic transfer. I ended up paying the fee once but that is mostly due to my laziness on cancelling the setup/account. I will most likely never do anything like that again because it was just waaaaaayyyyyy too much of a hassle. That sucks though that you had that experience. When I signed up for the stuff the banker set up all the auto transfers for me.

  • i've been getting about $8/month from interest rates on my checking account.

Do you just have a lot of money kicking around in it or do have a bawler interest rate?
  • I get some advanced pro account with my bank because I have a mortgage with them. The perks are just okay though. I would cancel them immediately if the bank ever tried to charge me for them.

    i'm rollin! d: i wish
  • My old account got a penny every now and then. My new one gets a penny every now and then. I see no difference. -_- (I keep most of my money in savings though and don't let it sit around where I can easily spend it)
  • I'm merely 19 and I too, feel too old for Homestuck. Couldn't get into it in the slightest.

It really is not for everyone, don't worry about it. The nature of the story and the way it is told is very polarizing; either you "get it" and it sucks you in, or you are turned off violently.

Ah, so homestuck IS all indecipherable bullshit! I was right all along!

  • It is perfectly decipherable. It just requires you to be very good at following a rather absurd amount of time travel.

No, the complicated aspects aren't the issue.

The blocks of text under most panels are. They read like Time cube.

  • I didn't get it after like 10 panels or something, so I closed the tab. Can someone actually tell me what the fuck Homestuck is?
