Did we watch the same show? Not that good a first episode if you ask me, a bad/unfleshed supporting cast that all react the same way? Feels a bit like they put too much eggs in their main moeblob basket. The bird was just bad and annoying, too forced I should say. Let's hope episode two spends more than three seconds on the whole supporting cast combined. I did like hearing Moyashimon's professor Itsuki in the grandfather.
tl;dr Kyoani's K-ON team in charge of writing moeblobs instead of just animating them, we'll see what happens. Also, where's that freaking tophat? Best part of the show is only in the OP?
Well I do enjoy slice of life shows quite a bit, and usually those with doses of absurd elements (like the bird), or a focus on comedic timing like Azumanga Daioh, really is my cup of tea. I agree with you that the bird did steal the show, and he could be the element that either turns you off it or pull you in. It did the latter for me. However that's not to say I found the other characters boring, they seem to be a close and believable bunch of people, something which most anime seem to relegate to the least priority these days, and am interested to see more avenues for them explored in the future.
However I do share your sentiment on the main character. Like K-On which I literally forgot about after two episodes-one day I just forgot it even existed till months later: the main characters made such a shallow impression...the main character Tamako is definitely being propped up by most of the other cast and their interactions, and if they mean for her to be the center stage, which they certainly do, I really need to see more out of her in the future.
Anyway, those are yukkuris. They're basically human children stand-ins that are made out of rice flour and bean paste. Think mochi, but sentient. There are two halves of the community when I observed it. The first just think they are cute and uses them to tell stories that make you aww. The other half draws torture porn manga, which they excuse by saying they aren't actually real, aren't actually human children, etcetera. The first one portrays them as naive and innocent, the other portray's them relentlessly as huge dicks, so that they can feel good about drawing that torture manga stuff.
I do apologize if this was more than anyone wanted to know.

They must do more with the secondary cast if they want to draw in more people. Episode 1 was Tamako, bird and a bit of Tamako's boyfriend. The rest of the cast made an appearance, but was flatter than paper. Ep 1 depicted them as carbon copies of each other. They're all nice, friendly, react the same way to Tamako freaking out about bird, and they all react the same way once they realize they forgot her birthday.

Much agreed. K-ON was also not that appealing on the first episode(s). Once I got over the initial hurdle (the fact that the music was good helped a lot with this) and started to regard main character Yui as anything but a character the show became fun to watch for me. Lucky Star also started with 4 shitty episodes and got better after that, so time will tell.
It would be a feat to know less about Touhou than I do.
Bull-fucking-shit. Tell us everything you know about Touhou, then we will see!
I do apologize if this was more than anyone wanted to know.
Now I'm confused as HOW the fuck you know all this crap. Dear lord, do still waters run that deep?
People should also check out the first 10 or so minutes of Kotoura-san. It's a comedy! And Sasami-san is so SHAFTxShinbo that my mind's blown.

It's funny how these statements can be almost applied universally to other internet fandoms.
