Beyond Candyland - MAGFest 11

Beyond Candyland
MAGFest 11

When most people think of board games, they imagine Monopoly, LIFE, Candyland, Pop-o-Matic Trouble, or perhaps Risk: games primarily of luck. There are, however, board games of skill that you've likely never heard of. Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan may have appeared on the Xbox, but these are just the tip of the iceberg.

Moreso, despite playing a multitude of games, many people never really move beyond Candy Land. Sure, they're playing games that are (in theory) much more complex than Candy Land, but do they truly progress? Move up the ladder and explore the next level of gaming, game design, and play. These aren't the games you played as a child.

  • I felt bad for being that guy you guys told to stop raising his hand, however it is good to know my similarly themed panel is going in a different direction.
  • I liked that the presentation was delivered with such confidence and focus. All of the presentations have really helped me understand my own biases and thought process when I'm winning or losing at games. But as predicted, I almost cannot stand the players in my group that never progress. What do!?

    Don't play with them.

I thought the same thing too when a couple of them were wanting to play Mario Party during our last session. As a final hurrah I'm going to play Shadows Over Camelot and troll them.

I thought the goal was to punish them, not you?
  • My boyfriend and I were at this panel, and immediately afterword he asked me to show him some board games at MAGFest. I don't think I've ever played so much 2-player Carcassonne or Takenoko in one week, and Beyond Candyland is at least 50% responsible. He even won my regular group's first game of Rex the next weekend! What the fuck!
