  • Wow. I'm the only one who has voted for Crystal Chronicles so far. >.>

Well for one thing, I'm not really an FF fan. I haven't played any of the other FF's, nor do I really want to, however I really enjoyed playing FF:CC mainly because of the multiplayer version. Three other friends and myself would get together once or twice a week and spend a few hours playing, leveling our characters and just advancing in the game. It took a good amount of teamwork to make sure everyone was doing their job and to stay within the "bubble" of what we would refer to as the "bucket". I played as a Lilty and really loved seeing how these radish/turnip creatures had no arms, but just hands. I enjoyed this game so much, I even bought the OST for it and really enjoy listening to it whenever I read.

I am really looking forward to this game when it comes out for the DS and the Wii. I can only imagine how much more fun the multiplayer will be.
  • This best thing I say about FFX-2 is the battle system alone. The thing they could've changed is having the class change be in real -time, not a short 10-second cinematic (Ooo! Look, you can see them CHANGE THEIR CLOTHES. Awesome for about......the first ten minutes. Forgot if you can actually turn that option off.) They could've called it "Chronicles of Yuna" or something like that. (Guilty of liking the pop-happy drunkeredness tone of this game as well)
I liked FF12's battle system as well...but you may get a bit lazy. FF8's Junction feature felt like you can customize your characters a great deal at the time.
Crystal Chronicles was awesome as a multi-player game, but the single player was a total bore, since it'll take you a great deal to take down even one enemy. Despite that, I"m looking forward to the two new FFCC games coming out, looked like to me they're taking the more traditional RPG route.
My mind is blown from work, so I cannot think of anymore to say...for now.

    Hahaha, VIII isn't losing completely!
    In fact, it's in third!

Legend of the Dragoon was the last playstation game to come out before the PS-2, and I have to say it went out with a bang. I was actually rather surprised the game wasn't made by Square Soft, because it contains a lot of their "personal touches". Like it holds the great characters, awesome plot, and spifftastic battle systems that Square Soft likes to use. Although the normal gameplay graphics well... suck... the amv's are AMAZING. Very well done for its time.

Although it's graphics aren't very good, the great plot, awesome development of characters, and 4 Discs of awesomeness made up for it. It had great settings, relatively good music, and a ton of characters to play (all complete with background stories to dive into).

It reminded me a lot of the Final Fantasy games, so that's why I brought it up... ^.^'
I loved the game for all those same reasons, but the translation seems a little odd in some places. I could never point out any specific thing, but the dialog just had an awkward feel overall. But hey, it had Sailor Moon-ish transformations and powers, and that gets some points right there. Plus it was wonderful that the battle system required actual interaction and timing.

Crystal Chronicles wasn't the best "Final Fantasy" ever.  What it was, quite simply, was the best gaming experience I've ever had.  That game deserves some respect.

  • No arguments on X-2. It was a piece of marketing bullshit. And yet, I doubt it was truly marketed at the young girls it so espoused, but rather the dungeon-dwelling otaku who listen to Anime Pulse. (oh snap!) FFX-2 deserves a full, no-holds-barred beatdown from Dave & Joel.
Actually, X-2 has very nearly my favorite battle system of any Final Fantasy.

Quality of story notwithstanding, the gameplay of X-2 is pretty dang fun.

The only thing I know about Legend of Dragoon is that it has wonderful music. ^_^
One of my friends has Legend of Dragoon. I forget why he picked it up, but Legend of Dragoon is an extremely good RPG, and in my mind it is on the same level as FFVII.

But that's not the point. Final Fantasy Tactics is. I don't give a damn that it gets really hard, or that it's extremely easy to just totally screw yourself over. That game is either the best or second-best SRPG (behind Fire Emblem) anywhere.

Wow, I'm kinda shocked. I expected a huge beatdown.
  • OK... So heres the deal,

    1) Final Fantasy IV: Amazing game, hands down.
    2) Final Fantasy VI: BEST VILLAIN EVER! Kefka wins! Not only does he win, he basically destroys the world for the hell of it. Also, awesome characters.
    3) Final Fantasy Tactics: What can I say, it took skill to play this game. You got wound up in a distinct power struggle, and your character is in self-induced exile fighting against his own brothers, all based on the honor, integrity and beliefs passed on by his old-man. (Wait, why does this sound like a Burning Wheel campaign?)
  • Well here is my list

    1. Final Fantasy IV(II): I liked everything except for the battle system, however, I can appreciate that it was a great system for it's time.

    2. Final Fantasy VII: Story line and character development was awesome. I liked the music but I really think it should have been orchestrated but I guess they used up all the room for their (at the time) new 3D system. If they remade this game without changing the character dialog I would like it a lot more.
  • I can't believe that Final Fantasy Tactics only has 10%. Oh well I guess it just means more awesome fun times for us Tactics fans.
  • YEAH TACTICS
  • It is so freaking awesome that the original Tactics is beating TA. They basically just took everything I've ever disliked about any final fantasy game, and wrapped it around the gameplay of it's superior predecessor... and what's up with the main characters being children? And the fact that instead of epic political/religious conflict we got a bunch of "clans" competing with each other? I mean, the translation wasn't great the first go around, but give me story and setting over some moogle classes I never used any day.

Actually, scratch that - moogle's awesome.
  • FFIV to the top, because Cecil is a beast. I am also excited about the whispers of an imminent FFIV remake to an enhanced DS version. I think it'll be somewhat like how FFIII was remade, I may have to dole out some cash for that.

FFIII was second because I just finished it and I am very happy with it.

FFVI sounds really cool because of Magitek/Magitech, that shit is always awesome, and the many positive reviews.

Its terrible, this poll just reminded me of all the Final Fantasy games I have to get.
  • I'm still a big fan of FFIII. I think I may be one of 4 people in the world who have a correctly translated ROM of that game.
  • I briefly played the enhanced FFIII DS and wanted to throw it at the wall. I hate random battles but I could live with them in the old games because you could just mash A quickly to get through them. In the remake I had to sit through a pointless 3D animation every time. Has anyone played the new IV yet?

  • I voted for FF6, but as much as I like that entry into the series I do not feel the game is perfect by any stretch of the imagination. My main problem is that the second half of the game feels so incredibly slapdash compared to the first half. For reference, I'm not complaining about the non-linearity of the second half. That bugged me the first time I played the game, but I realized later that taking the game off of it's rails was actually a good thing.

My complaint is that there is a certain level of detail to the game present in the first half, which is non-existent in the second half. For example, at the end of the opera scenario Celes tricks Setzer into helping the party with a double-headed coin. I forget who has the coin normally, but if Edgar is in the party then he provides the coin. If Sabin is in the party, he will realize that coin is the same one from that one time. That one time being when one of them had to ascend to the throne of Figaro, which they settled with a coin toss. The implication being that Edgar used a double-sided coin to guarantee that Sabin would have his freedom.

However in an unusual show of restraint for a JRPG, the game never outright tells you this. In fact, it's entirely plausible for the player to not bring either character to the opera and miss that exchange of dialogue completely (additional fun fact, if you bring both of these characters on the scenario then you probably won't be able to see all of Shadow's dreams, since you can only pick him up in the first half of the game so many times and he doesn't get the dreams in the second half of the game)

Compare this the second half of the game where you can recruit Sabin before you do the Edgar-in-Disguise scenario, but the only additional lines of dialogue come at the end of the scenario. Why doesn't he say he say anything when Celes disguised Edgar for the first time? While he is technically an optional character, you have either be consciously avoiding him or dumb to not have Sabin by that point.

Additionally, there's a lot more generic dialogue in the second half of the game when characters speak who aren't directly important to the scenario at hand. I realize that text space game at a premium back in those days and FF6 has a large cast to program dialogue option for, but it still smacks of laziness. It makes the cast of FF6 feel less unique and drains a lot of character of out the game. For the longest time I hadn't beaten FF6 simply because I got bored in the World of Ruin.

So while I vote for it as the best Final Fantasy, I do not consider it a perfect game.
  • FFVI I believe is the best Fantasy there is, but after I casted my vote...I felt sad because FFXI really did hold a place in my heart and no one else voted for it.

It was a great MMORPG, but the gameplay was just so incredibly slow and it was way more time-consuming than the regular murmorpager. It had some really engaging characters, some great stories, and FANTASTIC music though which a lot of MMOs seem to lack. Some nice diversity as well.

14's going to be less grind-tastic.

And that should excite me more than it does...
But I concur, FFVI is a fantastic game. In my top 5 games of all time, undoubtedly.
  • Pffft, Final Fantasy? How 'bout Phantasy Star? Now that was the business.

I loved the fact that you had to choose who you would marry at the game's mid-point, and that determined which character you would finish the game with.

I've only played Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe, but I've heard the original Genesis games were the shiz.

Indeed. Phantasy Star 4 in particular because of that one scene. My Dreamcast VMUs still have my PSO save game on it.

Mine probably do as well, though I imagine it's a crappy file since I restarted a lot towards the end of my PSO era. If only my Dreamcast had actually had internet...And I had the money to pay for online...So sad...
  • Online on the dreamcast hasn't worked since the early 2000's.

When I was a kid and went to daycare, this one kid brought in his Sega Master System and Phantasy Star 2 for a week or two straight, and we all sat there, engrossed, watching him go through the whole game. I was particularly proud of figuring out the clue that leads into the endgame.

Out of curiosity, I've been interested in playing some of the Phantasy Star games, but I have no idea where to start on them. Should I start from the beginning of the series, or jump in on PSIV since that's the most "modern" game and therefore probably the least grindy?
