John fucking Steinbeck can die in a fucking fire, and he can take all his ridiculously depressing books along with him in his funerary bonfire when rereading them causes him to commit suicide.
I remember being very frustrated by The Pearl and The Grapes of Wrath. I re-read both when I was older and had been beaten up by the world some. They made a lot more sense then. I wasn't required to read East of Eden and Of Mice and Men in school, so I didn't read them until I was an adult. I think I would've been similarly frustrated them when I was in school, but as an adult, I thought they were great. I highly recommend the movie version of Mice with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise and the move version of Eden with James Dean.
