I wonder how many times now I've pasted something into this comment box only to delete it and go back instead, too embarrassed to actually post what I had.

I'm not from the US, but I've traveled around a lot - and I will say without reservation that Detroit is easily one of my favorite cities in the US.
Sure, it's a bit shit around some bits. Many bits, in fact.
But people, even when they were pretty down and out, they were super nice, and always very hospitable. They'd talk to me, treated me like a person, not a nationality or a stereotype, or some outsider to be condescended to or have a face put on for. It's a city that has hustle and hope. I really like Detroit, even if it's not as (self) important as New York, or as glitzy as LA, but because it just is. Detroit doesn't make excuses for Detroit, Detroit looks you in the eye, asks if you've got a problem, and buys you a beer if you don't.
You want to talk about American spirit? Fuck all the hoo-rah jingoistic bullshit, it's Detroit, man. New York is the money, LA is the personality, and Florida is the big swinging dick, but Detroit's got the heart and soul.
