Just out of curiosity, if you wanted to rework the basic ideas of monopoly... the buying of property, building houses and hotels, etc; how would you (the collective you of the forum) fix Monopoly?

I think I can sum up every future response to this post with "make it a German board game."

Buying property, building houses and hotels, those are just stylistic things. There are thousands of games where players buy and build things. You can put Mr. Monopoly on the box, and you're set.

The thing is that at its core, the fundamental game mechanic of Monpoly, roll your dice move your mice, is deeply flawed. To make it a good game, you would have to not have any rolling or moving whatsoever.
  • One of my friend (in our board game society) once listed what might be wrong in a board game. These are very typical problems in any board game:
    Player elimination
    King making
    Runaway leader
    Downtime
    Game length / Undefined length
    Luck / Chaos
    Lack of real choices
    Low replay value
    Minimal player interaction
    Multi-player solitaire

I think the majority of these fit very well into Monopoly and for these reasons it would be a good idea to find something better to play. There are thousands of better games to choose from.
  • Anyone here played Galaxy Trucker? Does it warrant a purchase?

Yes, I've played this with friends several times. Even though it's pretty pricey, I enjoyed it very much. There is something about games where I build or combine things with tiles that I can't seem to get enough of.

There is some skill involved, however there is luck as well. There were some moments in the game, where a player's half of the ship got wiped out. It sucked, but it was pretty amusing.

Also, you have to love the fact that one of the final ships you build is pretty much the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Do you have a local gamestore in which you can test out the game? That might be your best bet before making a decision.

I'll second pretty much everything Ro said. The only thing I'll add is: if you don't like chaotic gameplay, this might not be for you. There is some dice rolling, and (depending on how well you built your ship) bad die rolls may have nasty consequences for you. It's not your typical German boardgame.

Having said that, I've also had a lot of fun with this one. But yeah, see if you can try it first. In addition to seeking out local gamestores, see if there are any game groups around you. There is a section of Game Group forums at boardgamegeek.com that is arranged geographically; look in there to see if there is any game group talk in the area pertaining to you. If you identify a group, ask them when/where they meet and ask if someone could bring Galaxy Trucker for you to try.

  • I'm trying to choose between buying Puerto Rico or Dominion as the 3rd game to add to my collection. Advice?
  • Dominion. Puerto Rico is fun, but Dominion has more variety in regards to the different cards you can play with.

    Thank, Ro. Ordering it now.
  • I agree with good lady Ro. Puerto Rico is a little "hardcore" and if your collection is small, you may want to keep it accessible if you'll be teaching geeklings. =D
  • Ok I am in a similar situation. Planning on purchasing Dominion because I (finally) got to play it this weekend, and I can tell it is exactly the type of game my local gaming friends will latch on to. I remember in one of the podcasts there was mention that once you play a few rounds of basic Dominion, an obvious strategy comes to light and kind of ruins the game, but I wasn't really paying attention cause I hadn't played the game before. Am I remembering correctly or was that in reference to another game? If so, which one of the several expansions should I pick up alongside it in order to have the best game? I'd like to only buy 1 expansion right now.
  • If I had to pick one expansion only? Gah. That's tough... Don't get alchemy, that's for sure. Not that it's bad, but it's a small set and it has 3 cards I consider to be borderline broken.

I'd go with Seaside if I had to pick just one.

I would also go with Seaside -- I like the Duration cards and some of the other things it introduces. If your group likes a little nastiness, though, you might prefer the Intrigue expansion. Cards like Torturer, Swindler, and Saboteur will put lots of Curse cards in play, as well as trash opponent cards and generally mess with their decks. Some people like that sort of thing, some people hate it....
  • ^ What he said.

It really depends. There is a certain person in my group of gaming friends that always likes to play the "screw you over" cards on people all the time. While it works for him, it gets really annoying at times. I need to figure out better ways to get my deck going before he can be able to steal my money or prevent me from getting cards.

I would suggest Intrigue, however Seaside is pretty fun. Don't forget to get the promotional cards as well.
