I just saw the new Transformers movie...

edited July 2007 in Movies
It was unbelievably awesome! Easily the best movie I've seen this year. They managed to keep the essence of the old show while not alienating anybody who hasn't seen it already. I would say more but I don't really want to give anything away.

So has anyone else managed to see it yet? I know it’s not out in the US for another few days, but we Aussies got it a week early! We get screwed with the release dates for everything else so it's good to get something ahead of everyone else for once.

  • I'm planning on watching it, but I've greatly lowered my expectations so as to not be disappointed.

I loved Transformers to death as a child, but when I watch it now, it's painful. I still love it because it's a thing I have to love, but I'm not going to pretend it's good.

I expect giant robots blowing things up with pretty CG. I hope it delivers.

    Same here.

If I see it, I will also drastically lower my expectations. I think hearing the real Optimus Prime voice will be enough to entertain me for at least 30 minutes if not the entire movie. I probably won't pay theater price, but Netflix/bittorrent wouldn't be so bad. If it is playing on the beach, I might see it then.
  • I know how you feel about lowering your expectations, I'm just hoping for some 2 hours of mindless entertainment. Lucky for me here in Mexico, movie tickets are only 5dlls and half price on Wednesdays.
  • All the Chevy dealerships in my area have Transformers posters hanging up in the showroom.
  • Well I probably shouldn't be on here hyping it up for everyone then! The only thing I will say is that anyone who liked the original TV show should be pretty happy with it.

My only real complaint about this movie is that it is really one big ad for General Motors. Even the incidental cars that get destroyed just after they appear on screen are made by GM.

If the movie is an ad for GM, why should we pay to see it? GM should pay for all of the movie production and let us see it for free. I mean, the original Transformers was basically just a commercial for toys, but it didn't cost anything to watch.

I think a lot of us are planning to go in with low expectations.

I'm going to go see it this week. I expect that most people who think they''re going to be disappointed probably will. Right now, the only things I really expect out of the movie are big robots and explosions. I really can't see how they could fail to show at least that.

  • Yeah I've been hearing decent stuff about it. One webcomic artist, David Willis, who does Shortpacked, is a big time Tranformers fanboy. From one of his webcomics he seemed to have really enjoyed the movie. So my boyfriend and I will still be going to the movie with low expectations like everyone else, and we're also planning on watching it on the 4th at night. We figure it won't be as packed because people will be too busy burning themselves or injuring themselves with fireworks.
  • When they replaced the bug with a Vette (right?) they lost me.

Tell me, is it any worse than the 4+ hour commercial for FedEx that stared Tom Hanks? What was that "movie" called, Castaway or something?
  • I'm assuming you guys have seen this travesty floating around.
  • I heard about that earlier this week and was nearly brought to my knees. God damn it is the style just heart stabbingly painful.
  • Well I've never watched transformers, so when I go and see this at midnight, I won't be disappointed because of my expectations. I'm just not expecting anything.

I feel the same way about shirts and other clothing with logos on them. If I pay $25 for a shirt that has "Abercrombie" plastered across the front, then I should get a stipend from the company to wear it. I'm a fucking walking billboard. That's why I tend to wear non-brand name clothing in my old age.

Its actually a Camaro, but close enough.

Well, i haven't seen castaway so I don't specifically know, but its not that bad really and i can forgive all of the GM stuff in it. They must have trashed a hell of a lot of cars to shoot the movie, and if they didn't get them for free off GM it would have cost a fortune.

Its not as bad as something like Casino Royale. The product placement in that movie was ridiculous. James Bond whips out his Sony Cybershot™ camera to take a picture of the bad guy, takes the Sony Memory Stick™ out of it and slides it into his Sony Vaio notebook™. He then uses his Sony Ericsson™ mobile phone to send the information back to MI5. Ridiculous!
  • I just got back from the movie, and it was awesome. I really enjoyed it. It's really a perfect summer movie.

    But not enough Starscream.
  • Just out of curiosity, does Megatron still transform into a gigantic gun?

Nope, he transforms into a jet fighter.
  • A Jet Fighter? Wasn't there one who did that in the old show?

If I recall correctly that character was a knock-off of a Robotech Veritech (toy-wise) and was pulled from the market after launch.

There were a zillion. The autobots were all different types of ground vehicles, but many of the Decepticons were the same exact fighter jet in different colors. Thundercracker, StarScream, and Skywarp were all the same toy in a different color.

That's JetFire. In the first season of the TV show JetFire is the only flying/airplane autobot. He's basically exactly the same as a Valkyrie except he's gigantic compared to the other the other Transformers in the show, at the time. Jetfire's size is very inconsistent throughout the show due to piss poor animation. One second he'll fit in a doorway, the next second he's big enough to carry everybody.

Close enough? I beg to differ!
  • I just saw it. It was great.

O rly? Well, maybe I can let my expectations go back up. I'll probably see it at the end of the week.
  • Can I just say that I thought that this was an amazing movie in every sense of the word? It had brilliant special effects and, well, it was just really well done. I have not read the comics or watched the original show, but I might start now because I liked this so much. It is definitely something that I would go and see in the theater.
  • I don't want to make a new thread, so I'll just share this here since it's Transformers related:

Man changes middle name to Megatron

I personally think it would be awesome if he changed it to from Michael to Metatron (they're both the names of archangels), but I'm not so sure everyone (or anyone) would get the joke (except for me, I think it'd be hilarious).
  • Yeah, I went and saw it this morning and I guess I wasn't expecting anything in particular as I don't have too many memories of transformers. That being said it was a pretty enjoyable movie! Giant robots, explosions, I think I'd equate it with Independence Day (the movie) which I also enjoyed on about the same level.

I thought the Metatron was the voice of God, or so says Kevin Smith.

Personally I think he should have gone with Galvatron.
  • Saw the movie last night. Awesome. It was pretty sad that I was only one of like 2 people who laughed at the inside joke of when Shia LeBeouf (sp?) said "More than meets the eye".

Overall, the fangirl/geek inside of me was very excited. During some parts of the movie, the song from the animated movie kept popping into my head. I wanted to scream, "You got to fight! You got the power!" Or something along the lines of that.
  • Megatron actually does turn into a cannon at one point! But it's not completely apparent unless you are watching closely during his fight with prime in the city.

Overall the movie was a fun ride, the same way Independence day was almost 10 years ago. It's big, it's stupid, but goddamn are there some good robot fight scenes.

However the movie would have been over if the Decepticons would have just used the buy it now function on the E-bay account this would have been a short movie!!!!

I have tons of comments about this movie both good and bad, but I'll save them till after more people see the movie.
