Have you guys seen this game: Crysis?

Check out the graphics on this game coming out!!

I'm sure my computer won't be able to run this one. Furthermore, it's using DX10. I heard that you need windows vista to run DX10. Is this correct?

  • It requires Vista so I didn't even give it two looks.

ANYTHING that requires Vista is worthless to me, and if I ever have to upgrade, it will be to Linux.

I will never, ever use Vista on any computer.
  • Yes you need Windows Vista to run DX 10, and you also need a DX 10 graphics card. But Crysis will run on DX9, just not in full graphical awesomeness.
  • The folks at Microsoft are not dumb. This is their category killer game. They realized that a great game will sell Vista. From what I've read and seen, this game lives up to it. I use Vista on my laptop. It's not horrible and it will only get better over time. One could dual boot Linux and Vista and use Vista solely to play the game.

Vista unavoidably came with my laptop, so I used it for two weeks before kicking it out. It really wasn't all that bad. It's just, there wasn't anything amazing about it that gave me a reason to not replace it with Ubuntu, especially on a laptop with no gaming action.

It's sad to say, but you'll have to give up PC gaming in the coming years.  Only Vista will support Direct X 10, and all games will eventually require it to play properly...

It won't be so bad. With every Id game on Steam as well as TF2/Portal/HL2, that should hold you over for a long long time. Toss in Spore and there will be non-Vista PC gaming to last you a very long time. As long as the XBox 360 exists, the only way they can get us is if Half-Life 3 or some such were to come out Vista-only. I highly doubt Valve will do that until their Steam survey shows a vast majority of Vista users.
  • Well directx10 wrappers for XP are already in testing so Crysis is probably going to be pretty quickly back-ported to XP unless Vista miraculously becomes awesome somehow.
  • Well, there's the additional problem that XP will eventually fall out of support.  Running an unsupported version of Windows is basically malware doom...
  • On the bright side the winedoors project will probably be pretty strong by then so theres the possibility of getting Crysis on Linux, if only a very small one.
  • Is it possible for someone to produce a program allowing dX10 on Vista?

Also, I thought Spore was killed. Is it still going to be produced?

I'm not sure what this question means.

Lies and rumors. Spore is very much coming out. Right now it is slated for early 2008.

Sorry, I mean a program that will run directX 10 on XP.
  • Damn. Missed a chance to use the word "havening"
XP isn't so drastically different that things made "exclusively for vista" can't be wrapped (adding stuff to them at runtime. rewriting the actual code would be illegal unless under the GPL or similar.) to allow them to run on XP.
  • DirectX 10 can apparently run on XP, theoretically. I know there were some guys saying there were writing hacks for Halo 2 and Shadowrun (both Vista, DX10 only games) so that you could play them on XP. Not sure how that actually turned out.
  • I love the gamer/hacker community. Whenever someone does something they don't want, they change it. Whenever someone fails to create something they do want, they make it.

There is actually a good reason to purchase this game now. A mod was released today: Mechwarrior Living Legends

  • I guess I can't play that, 'cause after all GIRLS CAN'T PLAY MECHWARRIOR or BATTLETECH.

    Scott.

It is true, with all those gears and whirly bits, your nails might get chipped and your hair stuck in something...(granted these are also reason's Rym can't pilot mechs as well).

Which is why they invented pilot suits with gloves and helmets to prevent those very specific things from happening.

Those mechs are fueled on pure testosterone and masculine rage. The only way to move your mech in a BattleTech: Firestorm cockpit is a sustained manly scream of anger. Robots. Men. Guns.
  • Like how Giant Robots in anime are often powered by shouting? (See Gurren Lagann.)

Yep. Also sweeping punching motions (Big O, "CAST IN THE NAME OF GOD...etc."), and extremely sexualized components (Getter Robo).

Are you saying you WANT to play?

I can't speak for Emily, but I know my other half well enough to say that she would, and she'd probably be better than me at it, too.

Few MEN truly want to play Battletech. They say they do, but when the game is actually in progress, they slacken in their resolve. It's a tedious, tedious game, filled with lookup tables and minutia. You spend more time referencing rules than you do playing.

Do not tread lightly into Battletech (or any wargame). If you're not sure, they're not for you. ^_~

(Try them anyway, but don't feel bad if you hate them).
    (I love them).
  • I've skimmed BattleTech rules...The word "grimoire" comes to mind. Those books are huge and filled with dark power.

Might I recommend Mechaton if BattleTech is too complex, but you want mecha combat action? 28 pages of rules by Vincent Baker (of Dogs in the Vineyard fame), and you build your minis out of legos! There's also an expansion which allows for building Titans, who are large lego mechs with dice pools for each component. I hear the game itself is excellent, and since everything is custom, you can field Big O, Gundams, EVAs, Getters, Fuchis and Tachis...pretty much anything you can build with legos and stat.

I own a copy of Mechaton. The only reason it has not been played is lack of LEGO and table.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my own Lego collection, so I'm roughly in the same place. I'm using photostreams like this and this for inspiration, and I'll likely get my lego pieces in bulk from Lego's website, as screwing around buying boxes is pricey and inefficient.

I would buy LEGO, but I already own LEGO. The thing is, they are all in my parent's house in a closet. There's also a lot of them, and my brother's LEGO are mixed in. I also have no space for them in my apartment.

My mom tossed all of my legos (and thus a fair deal of childhood memories) without telling me last year, so I'm rebuilding.
