Do not tread lightly into Battletech (or any wargame). If you're not sure, they're not for you. ^_~
Didn't Tycho once have a news post extolling the virtues of Warhammer? Something to the effect of "I can't imagine why people wouldn't want to spend 12 hours in a damp basement that smells of cat urine" when talking about why Dawn of War was a good game.

    I miss those days.

  • Pete likes tedious games because it appeals to the obsessive procedural bits of his brain. I hate them because I have ADD and the tedious, repetitive procedure makes it hard to stay interested; I need more than one thing going on OR a fast-paced game. If it's true that women are, in general, more apt to multitask than men, then that might be a plausible explanation for why men tend to be more interested in tedious, procedural games like Battletech and Civilization.

Also, I like fiddling with bits. Moving a bunch of awesome miniatures around on a table with 3-dimensional terrain is a lot of fun.

I forget what publication had the study, but I read a pretty in-depth article about the differences between male and female brains. I'll try to find it. Take my word for it, the female brain does more multitasking than the male brain. The female brain is also more detail-oriented.
then that might be a plausible explanation for why men tend to be more interested in tedious, procedural games like Battletech and Civilization.
    That's probably true.

I don't know if you look at Civilization players I would assume it has a pretty good ratio of male to female compared to Battletech...

Have you ever actually played the board game version? The original that came before the computer game? That's what I'm talking about. The computer takes most of the tedium away and speeds it up.

That game has nothing to do with the video game. Or does it?
The creator of the computer game Civilization, Sid Meier, claims that he did not play the original board game before making his game, but was instead inspired by SimCity, Railroad Tycoon and Risk. The name of the computer game was later decided during its development. Meier and MicroProse obtained the rights to use the name from Avalon Hill.[1] However, this claim is somewhat dubious as his co-designer remembers him owning the game at the time of development.[2]
  • Considering it's a very similar game mechanic, I'd say it does, whether it was intentional or not. You guys call games the same all the time. "This game is basically game X, but it takes 10 minutes instead of 2 hours."
  • BTW, if you don't have Civ IV already, get the Civ IV complete pack on Steam today for $13. It includes all the expansions and even Colonization!

Ooooo! Waddums, will you please get this on your Steam account?! Pretty, pretty please!

I nearly bought that pack yesterday, but I held off on the chance this might happen. Lesson: don't buy any non-front page discounted items in this sale until the last day, as they may become even more crazily low priced tomorrow.
  • And if you want Crysis, it's on sale with it's expansion pack for $13 today.
  • Just picked it up.

I want it but probably can't run it.
