Just a small thing of the day today. I was looking for a list of audio fiction podcasts to go through for research on a project I've undertaken. I found a list of podcasts that had either short or somewhat long reviews of them. There was one in particular there that I recognized; one done by a forumite we all know and respect..

Yeah, I've been a guest on a number of the others too. Some of them aren't running any more, but that is a pretty good list. I'd be surprised if my podcast wasn't on a list like that though, because it is pretty popular at the moment, and always increasing in popularity too. My latest podcast has had over 3000 downloads in one week, which is pretty good for what is essentially an hour-long rant about how much a book annoyed me.

Well I'm glad to see that your podcast is getting respected by many and is being included with other quality and well-produced podcasts such as the ones on that list. Keep it up!

One person's list isn't that important, not really. I'm much more interested in the emails from my listeners. For example, I did a review one of a quite complex book (or perceived complexity) and I got one email from someone saying "You should check out the scholarly work about the book..." and then another email from someone else saying "Hey, I wrote the scholarly work about the book, and I think..."
Funny video, Churba, but the editing is painful! Every other shot is an audience reaction shot, and the applause often comes at suspicious points. That doesn't give me confidence. Pulling off an artificial ear doesn't need a round of applause.

It is kinda annoyingly cut - I'm pretty sure that one was for a TV show - one of those "Check out five minutes by this comedian!" dealies, sort of like a clip show - rather than a DVD, thus the weird cuts. Though, I have seen him do this bit live, however, and it's longer, but the jokes are not modified in content, though it's certainly missing a few bits, and upon closer inspection, you can see him move positions during cuts faster than makes sense, or moving in ways that don't make sense - at one point, I noted him stepping forward to the same bit of stage on both sides of an applause cut - they're between jokes, rather than cutting into jokes. There is more material of the same quality in that bit, that they've cut for an unknown reason.
That doesn't make the editing any better or any less suss, but I will attest that the majority of the time, Adam Hills materiel is generally as high quality as the bits selected for that clip - and I only say a majority of the time because you can't kill 100% of the time, sometimes you'll just have a shit night at it.
What pisses me off is that it's a pretty universal problem - Even the "Live at the Apollo" specials do it, where you have a reasonable expectation of "Yeah, I'm watching a live recording, that's half the point that it's all recorded live" and they're not afraid to go overtime, not only do they cut the bloody 45 minute special down to about 30 minutes, but they pad the fuckers out with weird cuts and tat, so that you're actually getting about 25 minutes of actual content. Of course, then they release the "Extended edition" a few months later on DVD, after the sales of the original have petered out, where they have most of the extra twenty minutes put back in, and only a few little cuts padded out with applause.
I watched Louis CK's latest hour long show, from some network, and the editing is great! It's obviously recorded on two night, and maybe two different venues, because the lighting in the background changes from one shot to the next. However, he obviously has his material so tight, including all facial expressions and body language, that they can cut from one shot to another angle, with the second from a different night, and it is is seamless! At one point they cut between two different angles, and his mic swapped hands. But you know what? It didn't matter. The energy flowed, and the audience reaction was smooth and believable.
I'm not saying Adam Hills isn't funny. I really liked most of that bit. Fut standup is just as much about what the comedian does between the jokes than the funny lines themselves. Also, if I kept getting that many applauses at jokes that really didn't need them, I would intentionally talk over them, to get the people to calm the fuck down, and let me get on with it. Then again, my on-stage persona tells the audience to shut up all the time. If there is a joke, or I do a trick, and it takes people too long to clap or laugh, I tell them so. If they laugh at my next joke, I tell them to shut up, as they are only patronising me.

I've seen it - the mob that did the edit for that were good, and knew their shit. And Louis is very, very tight with his stuff, but I can't say I've ever seen him in person to make a comparison - However, I've heard he's damn good.

I was simply throwing in that he's good live also more as a "I can't understand why they did this, because it's not necessary" thing, but I did misinterpret somewhat what you meant to a point - I thought that the Bad Edit was making you suspicious of Hill's comedy chops, rather than just critiquing the poor-arse editing.
Weirdly, I think the on-stage persona that I use isn't dissimilar, though I'm obviously lacking in juggling skills and other various tricks, and you've been at it longer, and are therefore more polished. And you do it as a career, so are most likely damn near infinitely better. And don't have a tenancy to insult superior performers by comparing yourself to them. But I don't think I'm terrible, just average so far, with a slight knack for manipulating and exploiting the audience.
I've never done a standup set in my life, though I have hosted many open mic and open stage type events, where my only job is to be funny by talking and without jugging. If I had to do even 5 minutes, and with only talking, and had to make people laugh? I wouldn't even know where to start! I'd die on my arse so quickly. It's just not the kind of thing I do.
So I have soooo much respect for anyone who can do that. Which is why I think the editing in this clip really does Adam Hill a disservice. What are the audience doing? Who gives a shit?
That said, I perform on the same cruises with many standup comedians, and I always get more laughs in my show than they do in theirs, and bigger laughs too. And most people say I'm funnier than comedians. That may sound like I'm saying I'm awesome, but its actually because most stand up comedians on cruise ships are terrible, and all do the same kind of safe material. I can get away with getting someone on stage and physically assaulting them. Which is why I don't work on some of the high end ships any more, but I'm happy with that!

Other than bi bim bap, I enjoy this one dish where you wrap rice, meat, and red chili pepper in mint leaves. So delicious.
Now you're thinking with portals.
