Yeah, I guess when non-experts use tools occasionally, they never encounter the intended use cases or affordances.
That's baby's first tape measure if you've ever done construction or carpentry.
Eh, I'm less surprised. There's tools out there that even I've not imagined, I'd think that there's bound to be some features I've seen, but haven't thought of the use of. And since I've had a shitload of time on the tools, making things, I'd imagine there's rather more to discover for your average person who maybe might put up a shelf sometime.
Example - A forward-action staple gun. It's like a regular staple gun, but half backwards, so when you're putting force on it, it pushes towards where it staples the work-piece, rather than away from. A good one also shoots staples a pretty good distance, too. Didn't even know they existed till a mate bought one by chance.
Not that professionals don't have strange questions and ideas too - I think I once told the story either on a geekchat or the podcast about the time someone I was working with(who, for the record, was certified to teach welding) asked if I thought you could weld on the moon.
Chris Sanderson, the artist behind Lilo & Stitch and writer/director on How to Train Your Dragon, is working on a new thing about mermaids based on the Turkish mythology. The character designs are pretty neat, and the website has character backgrounds that are a good example of what anyone making a character should think about.
EDIT: Apparently they are also working with Genevieve Tsai too.
I am baby, but I think even my handyman dad never noticed that tape measures have their base widths written on them. Also I didn't know that the slot in the hook was for catching on nails.

Not all of them do. Some do, but it's a brand feature, not a universal one.
This was pretty cool. I do like the cool mash ups you see, as opposed to "Watch this Disney character drawn as someone with four noses" or some bollocks.
chipmunkson16speed takes Chipmunks covers of pop music and plays them at a speed where you can hear the original vocals. The playlist is called "SLUDGEFEST" but some of the songs take on an austere, majestic quality. Check out the vocal harmonies in Heaven is a Place on Earth:

(A: Yes, but you'd need a really long earth lead)
