  • Not full, just... heavily occupied. And my bastard of a video card is failing on me, so I have to sit TF2 out for a week or two until I get another one. It sucks sooooo bad. Luckily I managed to play for a little while, but only enough to see the commentary. Which was OK, not as great as the EP1 commentary. Anyway, I'm going to try and dig all the dust bunnies out of my card's fan (rather than play TF2... grrr!).
  • Ah, sorry to hear that, thaneofcawdor. I woke up a little bit ago and played a few rounds. I had to turn everything down, but I'm still quite impressed. The menus before you start and where you pick your class are very polished. Also, the video in the beginning of the match telling you what the point of the map/objectives are was pretty awesome. I'm off to play some more, I'll see you guys when you get on.

Damn this working to live crap! 5 more hours before I can play :(
How many years have we been waiting for this game again? 6? 7? Halflife is 10 next year... maybe its more like 8 or 9 ?

  • I just played two rounds, and now I'm going to work. In the first round I got owned because I had to figure the game out. In the second round, I pwned! Game is good. More later.
  • Some people are saying its been "dumbed down" for console tards, is this true?

I also hear there are no nades :( and no throwing packs for engineers. :(
Whats the accuracy like? nurfed like Shadowrun ? or as responsive as it should be ?
  • I love how if you win, you get keep your weapons out and run around and kill the other team before another match starts.

I did notice in the options some settings for a controller, but that may just be an update to the joystick options other games had. Also, I got one or two questionable headshots (Halo 2 style) with the sniper.

Yes, you ended up becoming my "nemesis" with your engineering skills.
  • I played a few rounds myself this morning. Damn, if I didn't have some important work to do today, it would have been a sick day.

They talk about that in the commentary. Apparently they didn't want players to be able to unload all their grenades just before death and score some cheap kills. Apparently it "confused" the nubs as they didn't know where the kill came from - lending credibility to the argument the game has been dumbed down.
  • "cheap kills" ? I always thought of them as revenge kills! ;) "Damn it you killed me!.... But I got you with a nade after I died! haha!"

So this means Con-jumping and Emp-jumping are out, I guess it did take some skill in timing to do them right, but I'm sure console guys would get it in the end, They cant be THAT dumb.. can they?

No nades?! Christ, that was one of my old strategies. Run for the flag with the demoman with a scout following. Charge down the 2Fort2 spiral hallway and start pulling pins on every grenade I had. I usualy didn't make it out alive, but I sure as hell cleared the way!

Does TF2 allow PC & Console players on the same servers? If that's the case, I feel so so sorry for any poor schmuck trying to console it vs. the mouse & keyboard people.

  • After playing Fortress Forever this weekend, which I will probably never play again, I must say I appreciate the removal of all the grenades. How annoying was it that as an engineer, absolutely any enemy could destroy my turret by throwing a zillion grenades about? Also, they really do spam up the game.

What it comes down to is Valve has realized the strength of the core idea of Team Fortress and pushed it to the max while taking out all the extras that distract from the core. You have an asymmetric game with different classes. Each class has incredible strengths and huge weaknesses. The scout can freakin' run fast as hell for getting flags or capturing, but isn't much good in a fight against most of the other classes. The sniper owns everyone at long range, period, but gets owned period at short range. This asymmetry and min/maxing of the classes amplifies the core play mechanic and removes distractions. Giving everyone the grenades, even specialized grenades, makes the classes more similar, not more different. The fact that the classes are so different from each other is what makes the game exciting.

As for the game being simplified for teh nubs. I think part of that is that Valve has streamlined the interface a great deal. Every TF mod to date has been a hackish, fan-made, inaccessible mess. There were always been way too many keybindings, poor or absent visual cues, and a steep learning curve. For example, look at the spy. In Fortress Forever, you need to bind a key to do "special stuff". Then push that button, move the mouse to the "cloak" icon, etc. You only know you are cloaked based on text at the bottom of the screen. In TF2, you push one button and you cloak immediately, you also use a wristwatch cloaking device so that you can see with your eyes that you are cloaked. This doesn't decrease the depth of gameplay in any way. It just makes the game feel easier because you are doing less work of dealing with a shit interface and you are only concentrating on the game at hand.

All this, and I only played two rounds.

The demo man has grenades, but nobody else does. Usually in TF games absolutely everyone has grenades. Now only the demo man has them. That's what sets him apart from all the other classes.

We discussed this before. Valve has said that it is technologically possible to play against the console people, because they do it in the office. It is up to Microsoft whether this becomes a reality or not. Right now only PC people can play because only people who pre-register the Orange Box on Steam can play the beta of TF2. You can most definitely play the game with an XBox 360 controller plugged into your PC. Why you would want to do this, I do not know. After playing with a mouse this morning, I can tell you that I had full mouse control, and there was no sort of aim assistance going on that I could tell. It is a full-on PC fps.
  • Lit a few people on fire this morning. I'm liking this game so far, and I never even played the original.

  • I never even played the original.Well, there are multiple "originals" depending on who you are.  "Team Fortress" was the true original, for Quake 1.  Mega TF was the more complex (and in my opinion superior) succession, which (spiritually) evolved into Weapons Factory on Quake 2.  Team Fortress Classic was a spur on to the Halflife engine, and was in my opinion a pretty piss-poor game.  Fortress Forever is a lot like it.

You just put a nice big smile on my face, Thank you! ^_^

Well, I just played a full evening of TF2, I must say I'm really enjoying it.

I am seeing some differences from the old TFC, solider seems slower, pyro damage has been boosted an INSANE amount, medic is pretty decent. scout looks retarded doing a double jump :P
My favorite change however is the Spy! I love it! Can't get enough of it! I never used to play spy, probably because it was almost usless, but now its great fun :D

  • Sasha and I are developing a beautiful relationship.

I definitely like the fact that every class has a big strength balanced by a big weakness. It encourages good teamwork rather than Ramboing every map. As a heavy, I wind up assisting in as many kills as I get myself, if not more. It's good stuff.

Soldier and Demoman are a lot of fun. I think I'm going to dedicate myself to the Pyro next; I'm a fan of fire. :p
  • 5 Heavy's with Medics == unstoppable in CP maps. Today we were beating CP maps in 2-3 min tops. Nothing could stop us. Bringing back the Heavy Train!!
  • Honestly, I keep trying to play something that isn't a Heavy, but nothing else is as satisfying as unloading Sasha into a Scout or Spy who thinks they're all that.

I'm actually liking the Medic. No matter what, you're always useful, and if you find a heavy to buddy up with, you're unstoppable.

My friends and I lost many needed nights of sleep back in college due to the first (Quake 1) Team Fortress. I never tried its successors though.
  • Anyone up for playing tonight on some empty server, just us?
  • I am loving this game so much.
  • I never played the original, but this is so awesome!
  • I'm upset about how little I got to play today. Only 2 hours...
  • I just played some more. I feel I could write an essay on why this game is so great. But I'll just mention that I have never laughed so frequently playing an FPS. It's just the atmosphere and the silly voices work so well. The death screen is also the best. You get to see your attacker, possibly commemorate the moment with a screen shot, see the bright side, and get the parts of your splattered remains identified. That's a great game.

I also want to say how surprised I am at how much I like the Scout. I'm pretty sure he's my favorite to play next to the medic. I don't care how fun it is to blow everyone away with Sasha, nothing is more satisfying than running up behind someone only to nail them in the head with a baseball bat or shoot them at point blank lethal range. Also, Scouts do quite well both in numbers and solo. There was one time where me and three other Scouts all rushed in, covered eachother's backs, grabbed the flag, and made it back quite handily. Scouts do great grabbing the flag solo most of the time, but the Scout's biggest enemy are definitely turret guns. They're pretty much the only thing that can counter their speed.
  • I have to agree with WaterIsPoison on the "heavy train" I was playing on a map he was on and for a good few minuets all I saw was a stream of kills from him and assists from his medic. I imagine you racked up a fair few points with that teaming ;)

I'm up for some matches tonight if I'm welcome. Although being rather a lot of hours ahead of most of you, so it will be early evening for most of you.
  • Ugh. I need to get my hands on a credit card. And I want Valve to hurry up and get more "Meet the.." vids out. XD

In the mean time I'll just lurk here, watch Youtube vids and cheer you guys on :D Also, an idea: If there are enough people of the Front Row Crew playing, a FRC vs. GN listeners match should be held.
