Running and gunning is not Gordan Freeman's forte. He's got a doctorate at MIT, he not a soldier. He doesn't beat back zombies by being a badass, even though that happens from time to time, he beats them back with tricky moves.
This part is something I like, but because Gordon's not a soldier doesn't mean his enemies should be "dumbed down" too. The fact that bad guys do take so many hitsThis is dumb. Half Life is more realistic in many ways than other shooters, but dumb enemies + bullet-garbage-cans = not fun.
HOWEVER
I did play more today. I took out the chopper, and while I CAN NOT STAND THE DRIVING, I had a hell of a time, and the puzzles along the way made me feel smart, while I simultaneously told myself outloud I was retarded for not seeing it before. I am TRYING TO LIKE IT, and it's slowly turning me. I think it just needs more than the boring encounters that started off the game. I don't want it to be Halo. I know why Portal came about to be what it is, and I really like Half Life's puzzlyness since there's nothing but BOOM BOOM BANG in the Halo games and such - I like mixing it up - I'm also not a PC gamer, and didn't play very many PC games growing up, but this is really starting to ramp up. I just hope it keeps it up.
I like needing to use cover because enemies spam you with bullets, but what I don't like is that I can chage them with my crowbar and they don't hide when I charge them... Be it a crowbar or a revolver.
Wrong. Portal gun + super gravity gun = best game ever. Also, you just know that they'll totally string you along little by little. They'll give crowbar. Then blue portal and crow bar. Then blue portal and gravity. Don't expect to get the full portal gun and gravity gun until the final chapter or two.
Mmm.... Portal gun + super gravity gun = too overpowered = boring game after 10 mins. It would be incredibly hard to balance a game to use both those tools together. Its more likely that Valve will run 2 stories along side each other for a while (cash in a bit) and if they do merge technology it will be a case of when you don't have the gravity gun you get the portal gun.

If they ran to hide when you rushed them, you would get to crowbar them in the back of the head. Think about it. If you have a submachine gun and grenades, are you going to run from a guy rushing you with a crowbar? Using the crowbar to kill a bad guy is a resource management decision. Depending on the bad guy or your level of skill, you are deciding that rather than spending ammo to kill this bad buy, you will spend health. If there are extra medkits nearby because you have been doing really well, then this is usually a good idea.
In Gears of War, Fear, other shooters I've played recently, enemies will dodge me, circle strafe, dive, or run backwards while firing. Once a Combine starts shooting, they stop moving and JUST shoot. Why don't they do SOMETHING to get away from me? I've just sprinted, jumped around and clubbed dudes who then just drop a health pack, so in the end I didn't lose anything... It's resourceful, but because of enemies who apparently can't see me coming.

Umm what difficulty are you playing at? Also, you have to remember it's a three year old game.
Thank you. Jesus. Why don't people acknowledge this? Listen, I love me some Metal Gear, but I'm not one to say the enemies or smart, the writing is perfect, or that the story is in any way coherent... Face it: HALF LIFE IS NOT PERFECT.
