We'll definitely have to set up some fightin' over the WiFi. Stay tuned (after Katsucon), though you guys can all organize some matches yourselves if you like. Scott and I can be the "bosses" for a tournament. ;^)
I am really interested in the Advance Wars franchise, but I have yet to find the need to own a portable gaming system. If you like Advance Wars you also might like this game I found on the PC.
Possibly one of the most dangerous stunts performed by untrained amateurs to appear on the internet and it is accompanied by a German rendition of Yankee Doodle; This is what the internet is all about.
I had long suspected my ears had been lying to me, but now.. I fear for my life. Used bugmenot.com to log in and see comments (Imagine youtube if occupied entirely by pubescent males.) but no-one posted the name of the track; Much to my disappointment.
Oh, and that reminds me, I saw something recently in a magazine about how much some neo-geo products go for these days.
I am on the second to last mission right now. I tried going for the quick win by flying all my planes up along the top with an infantry unit in each chopper but I screwed up and let my self be locked in by his one remaining fighter, and AA gun and an infantry unit. I'll likely reset and try again.

Rym, do you guys have any specific CO's or Maps that you favor over the others?
Anybody have some tips for mission 25? I try to establish a zone of control by the third factory from HQ and I keep getting leveled.
When I get pushed back to the HQ area all I can do is hold the north and south entrances until he comes in with 3 of the war tanks and takes me out. I have a good strategy to counter his air assault but by the time he pushes through (targeting my air defenses) it is near turn 50 and he has a massive fleet of planes just waiting to jump down my throat.
I have come very close to pulling off the quick win by using my copters to carry troops to his HQ with a fighter and bomber escort but he seems to have no problem building a fighter by the time I get close to his HQ. I don't even have a single factory up and running at this point so I still get creamed. The one thing I can say is that this strategy does destroy his air force as I take out his bombers along the way, everything else runs in fear of my bombers because I make it a point to knock out all but one of his missile launchers in the opening of the game.
I have no doubt this mission is winnable, I just have not hit on the right mix of units to pull it off. The best I can do is create a stalemate that lasts until I just turn the game off.
After hearing this episode, I am very excited for the game. I was already, but hearing that they banished the puzzle elements makes me so happy. Hopefully I'll be going out to get it after I get sweet my reminding-people-to-vote-monies.
Can you blow up the mortars in the final mission or are they just there forever?
I've taken down one laser and I outnumber his units 35 to 16. I've got a pretty good system going on where missile units cover for my bombers (that AI just will not send in planes if a missile unit is nearby!)
I've just bought Advance Wars DS (the first one), and having not played the previous GBA games, I'm quite overwhelmed. I would be very much interested in exactly what kind of thinking goes into the play of an expert.
Take for instance 'Ridge Island' in the War Room, with a single CO, just one opponent, and skills set to 'off' so that experience will be increased by a factor of 2.5. The enemy CO is Grit - and he creams me every time.
Asking all the Advance Wars veterans here: what affects your choice of CO, and in this particular example, how would you proceed? What is your result, i.e. how many days do you need for this particular map and setup, and what rank do you get? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
You would also want to choose a CO who can make the most of the terrain and the starting conditions. In the example, you start with less cities than the opponent. So would you therefore consider Colin, a CO who can buy new units cheaper? Or is this going to hurt later-on, as these units will be a bit weaker?
Then there are only three passages through those mountains which separate you and the enemy. Does that mean that you should not use tanks (and a CO with strong tanks), because they would have to filter through well defendable bottlenecks?
Has anyone played that mission yet with perfect scores?

Wait, you just bought the game, and you're in the war room? The war room are challenges that are designed to be played after you beat the normal game. If you're a nub, you should be playing campaign only until you beat all of it.
Also, I highly suggest starting with the GBA Advance Wars games. There is a progression of complexity.
I just beat the last mission. It was a long one but, like so many others in the game, a quick Blitzkrieg puts the game easily in your hand.
What confused me in the final battle (and some of the others) was the fact that if I attacked his Unit A with my Unit B it would leave him with 3HP. Yet, when he attacked my Unit A with his Unit B it would kill me. Caulder has a sick CO power too. It's like Brenner but it's always on!!!

I'm at level 11 in the campaign, and 'Ridge Island' has no features that have not yet been covered in the campaign. It's actually quite simple: no navy, no airforce, no fog of war and such.
Does that mean that without the "skills" that come with increasing CO rank, you cannot finish the war room levels with the maximum score? But then again, there is that option to specifically play without 'skills'. It would seem kinda unfair if you could not beat the level S-ranked under these conditions. I would very much like to know an experts score for this level under the conditions I mentioned earlier - anyone up for this?
Now that I have completed the campaign missions I'm going back and trying to S rank all of the missions. I can not get an S rank on the mission where you get your first factory (not sure which number). Has anyone been able to S rank this one?

What's your score at the end? Are you getting a low score on power, speed, or technique?
Speed is the number of turns it takes you to beat the mission. Each mission has a target number of days. If you beat the mission by the target, you will probably get enough points for S rank. The more days late you are, the lower grade you will get. Think of it as par in golf, only the number for getting par is secret.
Power is the damage you do. The more units you kill and the more damage you do to the other team, the more power you have. If you beat a mission with a quick transport copter HQ capture, you won't have a very good power rating. If you blow up some of their expensive units, then send in the chopper, power will be quite good. A good way to get a high power rating is to use artillery to hit their most expensive units. If you get a low power score, consider waiting a few turns before finishing the enemy off. Just sit at their base destroying every unit they build for a few turns.
Technique is a more general measure of efficiency. If you build twice as many guys as the opponent, that's not very efficient. Getting as much done with as few units as possible is the key to getting a high technique score. If you find that during the course of the mission you have a lot of extraneous units that don't do much, that is poor technique.

If a free play game has a time limit is the winner the one with the most units?

I'll find my copy and tell you the best score I ever got. I can tell you that the key is mechs, combining units that are damaged, tanks, and patience.
How does the game calculate those ratings?
