What is your favorite IM client?

edited April 2008 in Technology
Yeah, I saw an article about this on Lifehacker...so I felt like making a forum topic about it.

So yeah, which client do your normally use?

Personally, I use Pidgin. I mainly only have AIM screennames on there, but I have a few Yahoo ones, and it can access IRC, so it works all around for me. Plus, the interface kicks the shit out of AIM (which is what I previously used).

  • Pidgin, mostly out of lazyness and lack of anything that works better on windows.

  • OSX: iChat + X-Chat Aqua
    Ubuntu: Pidgin + XChat
  • OSX: Adium!
Windows/Linux: Pidgin (cause its kinda like Adium).
  • Windows: Trillian (Astra)!
    Linux (Ubuntu): Pidgin
OSX: Never used OSX, but this Adium seems to be awesome.
  • Trillian Astra looks interesting, since it looks like I can use it on OSX.
  • I use Kopete and sometimes the client built into the side of GMail.

  • I use Pidgin on Linux, though I wish there was a better client.
  • Pidgin on my Linux box, but I <3 Adium on my Mac. Adium FTW.
  • I use Adium
  • Adium with Calvin and Hobbes Dock Icon, "See through me colors" contact list theme, and "Tokyo train station" sound set.
  • I use pidgin because of it's simplicity, and for lack of anything better to use on my home machines. I however can't IM on the one OSX machine I use at school.
  • Pidgin on a Vista (Yeah, yeah) machine. I like the easy interface mostly.
  • I use MSN.
  • Pidgin is pretty much the only IM client besides owl that can interface with Zephyr, so I use that.
  • I use AIM and I hate it.

OH man... I mean, really, dood. Pidgin is such a quick download and install.
  • The masochism has stopped, I switched to Pidgin.
  • I use Meebo, but I might try some of these others.
  • Windows: I use Gaim for everything except IRC. For that I use the Chatzilla extension for Phoenix.
OSX: Adium. Adium and Colloquy are both excellent in their own realms.
Ubuntu: Pidgin, though I rarely need to use it (I usually have the macbook open)

Wait...what the hell? Why aren't you using Pidgin and Firefox? I know for a fact that Gaim is just an outdated old version of Pidgin, and I believe that Phoenix is the old Firefox browser...so what gives, man?

  • I've been a long-time Gaim/Pidgin user and I just discovered Digsby. I've made the switch and I have no intention of going back. I would TOTALLY use Adium if I had a Mac, though.

I just had the same experience, within a minute of loading the program I was sold.

Since I am dissatisfied with all my current IM choices, I will definitely check out the Digsby when the Linux version comes out. Whether I keep using it depends on the level of Jabber support they offer.
  • Ditto. I joined the mailing list.

Eh. I just don't get the appeal. I mean, I tried Digsby, and the integration with Twitter and Facebook is kinda cool, but for some reason I just find myself back at old, familiar Pidgin.

What would the perfect IM have?

So, I've been using Trillian for the past four years. I tried downloading Pidgin, but I really didn't give me a shot. I don't really like adapting to a new client (even though it takes, like, 1 day to figure stuff out... and I feel proud afterward), and I have all my conversation histories for easy access (and that is useful). So I challenge the forum:
Tell me why I should switch from Trillian to another client?

Unfortunately, I don't have much knowledge of Trillian...so I can only list the pros and cons of pidgin:
    - easy to use. Just type in your usename and password for whatever protocol you want to sign into and you're good to go.
    - lots of plugins.
    - good amount of preferences

    cons:
    - not skinnable
    - no voice or video chatting....yet. It'll get it soon enough, I'd have to think.
