What is your favorite IM client?

What is everyone using these days? I myself use gtalk and skype primarily, and steam is for the many situational times that I need it.

Gtalk is best used at my school where a proxy is used to have everyone go through a content filter and for network tracking. Gtalk is almost instant and always works. Skype tends to shit itself trying to get through that even though I have proxy authentication enabled, so it can take up to 30 minutes to get "connected" and have your chats displayed while inside the school network. Otherwise at home I'm in 3 different skype groups with 3 different circles of friends which are unfortunately mutually exclusive.

Steam is great for getting my friend's attention while they're in game or vice versa.

  • I use Digsby, primarily because it's got a Gmail notifier that can mark messages as read or delete them from the system tray, and the Twitter plugin works better for me than any other Twitter app I've tried.
  • I use Gtalk, I haven't loaded a IM client on my computer in years.
  • I use smoke signals.
  • Still sticking with Digsby. I'm not a fan of all the adware shit they package with it, but if you're paying attention during the install you don't have to worry about it.

This. No other Twitter app (for any device/OS, as far as I can tell) works as well as Digsby.
  • Been using Adium and Skype for the last several years. Don't see any reason to switch now.
  • I use Windows Live Messenger and Skype.

I reconnected with a friend through Skype last night. Otherwise, XMPP on-site clients like GTalk and Facebook Chat, and Pidgin.

I use Pidgin connected to MSN, GTalk and combined with Skype4Pidgin and Skype, it lists my Skype contacts as well, so I only need to open a single window to see who's online. The notifications in Ubuntu are also handy.

I'm happy to pay for software, but Trillian is an IM Client, and Pidgin is free and excellent.

I just use Skype, I don't need to log into a million different accounts.

  • I use Adium for instant messages and I use Skype whenever I feel like actually talking.
