My friend keeps being like, "NO EBOLA SYNDROME. Not in MY house! derpviolencederp!" She refuses to watch clips proving that it's just ridiculously hilarious Hong Kong camp, and won't read about the film.
Would you watch Ebola Syndrome with all the heavy violence and gore redacted/replaced with "normal" violence? If not, the you don't like ES because it is Hong Kong camp, but because you like violence.

Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with liking violence (although actually there is, if you like it too much), but at least don't delude yourself about why you like watching those movies.

  • With something like Ebola Syndome, it's hard to separate violence from camp. At least in my mind, there's a certain point where violence transitions to either camp or aestheticization. Ebola Syndrome is an example of of the former; if any of that violence was played straight (say, if you removed the spitting and ridiculous elements and just got an unfathomably evil, misanthropic character bent on starting a pandemic through rape and butchery), the movie would be really disturbing. In the latter case, with a movie like Kill Bill or Hard Boiled, if the violence wasn't worked as a stylistic element and was just sword chopping and headshots, both movies would be FAR less interesting.

I guess I like movies like Braindead because they have a good mix of violence and camp, and I do like some violence in a movie. However, straight violence/gore I usually can't take (that's why I won't watch Saw or Hostel; I mentioned my aversion to torture porn above). I guess said violence just needs to be aestheticized well enough to be enjoyable, or taken into the realm of ridiculous camp.

  • Y'all should watch The Holy Mountain by Jodorowsky, beautiful psychedelic violence.

Jodorowski is crazy. A genius, but crazy. If you haven't seen El Topo (though, having seen Holy Mountain, you likely have) you should definitely check it out.

Jodorowsky did a remake of Moebius' classic "Incal", let's just say it is interesting. And by interesting I mean it is basically crap.

  • There's a movie based on that comic?
Does it have the hot rat queen in it?

(Not that I want to see it, if it is crap.)

Fair's fair. As far as I'm concerned, he's only a genius insofar as El Topo had a tremendous impact. I can't speak to the quality of his other works.

I've only seen El Topo and The Holy Mountain which are both absolutely amazing, but I hear Santa Sangre and The Rainbow Thief are really good too. Haven't read any of his comics.

No, it's just a comic remake.

I've briefly looked at the Technopriests, Metabarons, and the Borgia series, which are his main works, and there's a fair amount of violence and porn (in the case of The Borgia the latter can be attributed to Milo Manara being the artist;-) ), without a really compelling storyline/dialog. I must admit that my french is not good enough to read those books in french, so my impression may be solely due to the translations crappiness.

I should also point out that the issue I have with the Incal series is slightly more complex in that the original Incal was also written by Jodorowsky but it was the first of his works set in Jodorowsky's Universe. The "remake" I am dissatisfied with is a prequel to the classic Incal (ruining one of the most salient part of the plot/meaning simply by existing), and suffers from "feature creep", i.e., other parts of this Universe coming in.

In essence it is the same problem as with The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again.
  • I'm a massive fan of asian gore films, glad to see you fellas like them too. A great little podcast there.

Ichi the Killer actually has a much better manga with a better ending. Very sadly its not out in english but is ony a 500 ism mb download. Fun fact about the film is the films title coming up through the love custard was infact actual love custard, makes you think differently when you see it.

A few gore films I'd reccomend any to see (if they can take it) are :
Kichiku dai enkai - Banquet of the Beasts - Low budget and starts with a sex seen where you see a blokes spotty arse, but once it gets going has some of the best gore I've seen, they got a great bit of use from a shotgun (at very very close range).
Audition - SLOW film up till the end which gives it more of a kick.
Three Extremes film called Dumplings - Not exaclty that much of a gore feast but it's really what the dumplings are made of that makes the film. There is also 2 cuts of the film, 1 shorter cut for the Three Extremes and a longer cut with a different ending which I think is better.
Evil Dead Trap - Old but pretty good slaher film.
The Guinea Pig Series - but mainly the 2nd film Za Ginipiggu 2 - Chiniku no hana or Flower of flesh and blood. If you do a little googling you'll find out this film got the makers in trouble as an america actor thought it was a real snuff film, it's not though. Plus its only 40 minutes long so it's short and sweet. The first film is the series is just plant rubbish though, you have been warned!
Suicide Circle can be found as Suicide Club - some great gore in this like the mass suicide of 54 schoolgirls at the start.

I'd highly reccomend a great review site called snowblood apple http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/index2.htm

Thanks to them I have seen some fantastic films. They did a great review of Battle Royale too, which is how I found them.
