  • Wow. 1998 really doesn't seem that long ago.
  • They grow up so fast. Sniff.
  • I've never been able to play DDR on an arcade machine.
  • Huh, it's kind of hard to believe time has gone by that quickly.
  • Wow. Let's play the Playstation DDR's in celebration!
  • ..That's it? ... For some reason, I feel like it was around a lot longer than that. All I remember is playing on one when I was still boobless.

If you live in the continental US, you should have no problem finding one.
If you don't, then sorry man, that blows (though I'd bet that Europe has a fair share, and Japan has a ton, obviously).
  • He lives in Germany, if I remember correctly.
  • Yes, forget finding any decent arcade here.
  • Really? 10 years, it seems to me that it was longer than 10 years, time flies I guess
  • I just started to get into, DDR myself. I found one of the old Japaneses Super Nova machine at 6 flags, since it was to cold for coasters. I was hooked, spending pretty much half my money that day on DDR and time crisis 2&3. It was a lot of fun and I was dripping with sweet by the time I ran out of cash. I really enjoyed since I new almost all the songs. There were some J-rock/J-pop classics in there.

And last Friday I picked up DDR: hottest party for the Wii. it's pretty fun once you turn of the gimmicks and the hand moments. now I just need to find a pad that doesn't slide around on the carpet. The songs are more geared towards American classics that have a techno remix. I not the best but I like it. I'm thinking of getting some for the Mac/PC If I can. or I'll just have to find an arcade around here that has DDR.
  • Wow, I've been playing DDR for 8 or 9 years and I still suck ass..
  • I've never played a real DDR. My girlfriend and I got a couple of pads to play Stepmania recently, though. Cheap plastic pads, but we put a 25-pound weight in the middle of each one -- keeps it from sliding around, and lets you feel where you are on the pad. We're definitely having fun.

Yeah, pretty much all the most recent console releases of DDR have been shit games ridden with Sean Paul and Fall out Boy. IMO the last good home release was Extreme 2. Sure it had some Sean Paul, but it had a LOT of good classic DDR songs.

As far as I'm concerned, the only two serious options for DDR are:
    - arcades
    - stepmania (on judge 6) with metal pads

Anything else is good if you just want to pursue it as a small hobby. If you want to really get good, you have to do one of the above (and hell, most good players say arcade is the ONLY valid way of getting better...).

  • Yeah, like I said, I'm gonna have to find an arcade near buy with a super Nova machine or I'm gonna have to get a PS2 and a red octane pad. The arcade ver. is probably cheaper.

The one for the Wii isn't too bad, and it doesnt have fall out boy, as far as I know.

I still enjoy the game a lot tough. Plus, it's good practice since I'm still new at this anyway. I'm still doing a lot of the easy stuff and I'm not very graceful on the pad. I'm like a clunky hockey player balancing on Ice skates and still trying to score a goal. (okay bad analogy)
  • Console DDR has died after Extreme 2. It was a sad day when I saw Supernova. I haven't played the arcade equivalent so there's still hope right?

  • Supernova in the arcade is pretty awesome compared to the Max/extreme editions.

Yeah, the arcade version of Supernova is pretty damn awesome. Lack of Fall Out Boy and other American shit songs, and an inclusion of Max 300 Max Me Mix.
I don't play much SN, though, since the only machine near me has shit pads and it's a half hour away...vs the arcade I go to that's 10 mis away with Extreme and ITG.
  • DEXCON in New Jersey always has full size DDR machines for the CON.

That's nice. So does Ohayocon, (maybe for this year) Colossalcon, Acen, (I'm assuming) Otakon, and (I'm also assuming) Anime Expo.
  • What is the best price to durability ratio pad that I can get, I want one that is pretty universal (USB/PS2/game cube/USB Mac/etc.) and is under $100, maybe under $150 if I can get a another job soon.

Once I get my Powerbook back from it's 'hospital' visit, I'm gonna be hooking stepmania up to it and and play the shizle out of it. My plan is to hook the PowerBook up to the TV via S-video, Then hook up the Pad via USB, Hook up some external speakers and I'm In business.

The Ingnition. It works with PS1/2, XboX, and USB. No GameCube, though.

    Fuck that, Afterburner: http://www.redoctane.com/redoctanemetalpad.html
The Afterburner is easily the closest I've ever come to getting an arcade-at-home experience. The one I played on got broke at an anime con after 10+ hours of getting RAPED by con goers.
Otherwise I hear it's great quality.

Another good pad is the React pad: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7802933&type;=product&id;=1142293794986
It is exactly the same as the Ignition. Same foam, same pad, same quality (ignition might be better, but my friend has a pair of ignitions and they're both broke...and he doesn't even play that often at home)...and it's only $30....kinda big problem with react- no USB. You might be able to get it USB connected via the Xbox port...but I dunno for sure.

Yeah, great. Except for the fact that he said under $100.

    Look at my edited post.

Oh also, watch out for external speakers. You might get some lag.
Other than that, I've played with React, Ignition, and Afterburner. Afterburner is, by far, worth the extra $130. Since with just basic home play (i.e. not 10 hours of straight play), it won't break on you. With React and Ignition you'll most likely have to buy a second or even third pad after a few months of use.

I'm thinking of buying a new pad also for very casual use at home. I'm not a DDR fanatic so a cheap pad is good. The React looks nice but if its the same as the ignition, why is it so much cheaper? Which of the 2 would be best price for quality wise?

Also, you guys speak of a "pinnacle" of DDR, but isnt the only difference the songs? And if so, isnt that completely based on preference? I happen to like Fallout Boy.

The community and the fact that it still existed in arcades made it the pinnacle of DDR. Back then, machines were everywhere, and lots of people played on a regular basis in public. DDR's popularity rode in a wave from the West coast, then to the East coast, and finally into the midwest, where it's slowly dying.
