  • I suppose a lot depends on the level of violence. In The Bridge, the documentary film makers filmed a year's worth of people jumping off of the Golden Gate bridge. Visually, other than the height, there really isn't much difference between these folks and someone who jumps into a body of water for recreational purposes.

Also, I thought snuff films were only for porn.
You guys (ie. Sail), correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that snuff had nothing to do with porn.

I thought it was equivalent, i.e. using death to replace sex.

I'd never heard about anything like this before Kage's post. If there's actually porn that has death in it, that's some seriously fucked up shit.
  • Forgetting the rules of the internet?
    There is porn about it.

Oh I get it. That's not a tired joke at all.

This film is responsible for a lot of that confusion, and much of the urban legend about snuff films.

The movie is Snuff, and it was marketed as an actual snuff movie back when it was made. It's got some porno-esque elements in it, and the end of the movie is a (fake) snuff segment.

Some people are just fucked up.
  • Again, we weren't watching this stuff for entertainment. I don't know how you guys got that out of my posts. I guess my word choice was improper. We weren't watching snuff, we were watching people's deaths that had been accidentally (is that the right word for this?) recorded.
I was not saying you guys watched it for any sort of pleasure (sexual or any other sort of entertainment) - but there are people who do watch this stuff for those reasons.

Those people are more fucked up than those who jus watch it for entertainment.

This thread is very interesting. If it's fake it's cool to like it. (Last night someone called Battle Royale a snuff like film) Seeing someone kill or kill themselves for reals is not cool, fucked up and they need help.

Some people find entertainment from both and can be just as fucked up as the other. So why not say all movies with snuff elements are horrible things? Just asking.

Yeah, the fake vs. real thing is very strange. I can watch fake gore like Ichi the Killer without a problem. However, even a little tiny bit of real-world gore makes me bargle. I can't even watch surgery, which is the opposite of violence, without getting queasy.
  • You know what's odd? Being on the scene of a fatal car crash with a bloody corpse lying in the roadway a few feet away. The firefighters and paramedics are usually smiling while going about their jobs. It's unsettling, especially when after a while they start joking back and forth with each other as a stress-handling mechanism.

I've seen this in action. I wanted to smash them.

Oh my god. I walked into my friend's apartment right on that scene, when I hadn't seen that movie yet. I grabbed MY chest in reflex. That's the first thing I think of when anyone mentions Ichi the Killer.

Why would you want to smash these people? Their job is handling and dealing with death. If you don't develop a mechanism to deal with death 24/7, you would probably lose your mind and be unable to do your job. There is a reason why we desensitize solders before we send them off to war. Without physiologically training yourself to cope with death on a constant basis, you will not be able to function.
  • I have owned a copy of Ichi the Killer for about a year and a half now and have never watched it. I am completely amazed at this fact.

I have to agree. Going through my first aid course, my imagination hit me full force and I had to make jokes or I'd start to cry or simply be unable to process what the teacher was saying. Also, our teacher had an amazing sense of humor.. but it was incredibly morbid at times, and while you laugh at first, later on you're going, "...That wasn't a joke."
