  • Hmm, but will the free-form do whatever you want creature creation mode exist in the final game?

Not sure. I'm guessing it probably will be but I have no confirmation on that.
  • I was thinking I would buy the creature creator demo to be able to talk about it, but if the only difference between that and the demo is 4 times the number of parts, I'll take a pass. People already seem to be able to make a wide variety with the demo.
  • I have yet to get the creator, however my question is what does everything think the minimum specs for your computer and its components need to be to be able to run this game?

Also I just found out it will be available on the DS. Hot. (Yes, I'm behind on the times)
  • The DS version, sadly, looks kind of crappy. It has an origami look to it, and I think it's more in the vein of a creature battle arena than any kind of wide-ranging sandbox or strategy game.

The DS version will be different than the PC version. It's essentially a 2D role playing game. It's called Spore Creatures.

Windows XP/Vista, 2.0 GHz P4 processor or eq., 512 MB RAM (768 for Vista), 128 MB video card (Pixel Shader 2.0 support), 6 GB HD. (For computers using built-in graphics chipsets: Intel Integrated Chipset 945GM, 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, 768 MB RAM)

Seriously? Ten dollars is that much of a financial burden for you? I think it's worth it.

Yeah, I was just looking at screen shots and wasn't impressed with the graphics, however, I'm still interested in the game play.

I've just been hankering for a new DS game, and have yet to find anything that really gets me excited. I'm still contemplating on getting Chibi Robo: Park Patrol, but I don't know. I will still have to do more investigating to see what it's all about. I pretty much need to stop being lazy.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I shouldn't have any problem running this bad boy.

I don't think it is the fact that it costs 10 dollars, it just doesn't make much sense. If it's going to be in the final version of the game, why not just wait a few months for it to come out?
  • I've just been hankering for a new DS game....
Have you played Phoenix Wright? It's only about $25 on play-asia.com. Have you played Trauma center? I heard it was good.

Yeah, the money is only part of it. It's that I don't think that having four times the number of parts to work with will give me any more enjoyment than I get from the demo. I'm going to buy the final game no matter what, so why bother?

Cause that's a few months away... But whatever, to each his own.

Also, I feel that this is a quality product and me giving them $10 means that I'm supporting the developers to make sure the game is the best it can be. Who knows, perhaps they will use the money to add more features to Sporepedia and such.

I know I might get some flack for this, but I tried playing Phoenix Wright, and I just couldn't get through it. I heard Trauma Center is good. I might pick that up. I enjoyed Cooking Mama 1 & 2, so Trauma Center seems like it's right up my alley, but it has to do with body parts. That's probably the only thing putting me off.

As for the Pokemon Spore creations, those were pretty awesome. It makes me want to create anime creature characters like Mokona from Magic Knights Rayearth or even better, Yoshi.

I think my Squigs turned out alright.
  • The Sporepedia servers are now up so you can register your accounts.

Scott, you should add Sporepedia accounts to IDShare.

Ok, but I still need to work on replacing the shitty IDSHare.
  • Sorry for the double post, but Spore is really the new favorite tool for perverts.
  • I wanted to make the ultimate spore predator, stats wise. Came up with this guy.

    Dilono
    Sneak: 5
    Sprint: 5

    Bite: 5
    Charge: 5
    Strike: 5

    Sing: 5
    Dance: 4
    Pose: 5

    Speed: 5
    Health: 50

When he attacks he stands on his hind legs using the claws on his front paws to attack. Since this species has a lot of inter-species fighting for territory, they have developed some neck plates and a singular large chest plate for defense. The tail is decorated with Diamonds(?) and large spike balls which are used to lure mates but also for another form of attack.

The large horns on its back are for intimidation but also display an individuals maturity level, small horns for the young males, none for females.

He has two mouths. The prominent one at the front is used for battle, such as biting, and is also the main passageway of air. It is able to eat food but with a smaller access to the stomach, the prominent mouth is herbivorous. The second mouth is omnivorous, used for eating prey the creature has killed with incredibly sharp teeth. It has access to the lungs but only uses them when roaring, for extra vocal intimidation of competing Dilonos.
  • Well, it appears, according to the Internet, that they're beginning to ban or threaten banning for anyone who makes an "obscene" creature.

A option to filter them out should be enough. Creators could tag them as "obscene", the community should be able to report and in general there should be moderators looking around.
Spore appeals to a great audience, so it should be made for a great audience, otherwise it will go down quick.

Honestly? There is nothing stopping people from making penis monsters in game, you just can't upload them to the Sporepedia. I don't think that the ability of not being able to make the Goatse monster will somehow make this game non-marketable. With the full release of the game they will allow you to filter creatures in your game by either No Custom Content, Official Maxis Content only, Buddy Content, or All Custom Content.
  • This is going to be an interesting problem. Whenever a game has an online component, the ESRB always makes sure to say that the online part is not rated. Yet, we are in a situation where more and more of the top games are going to have more and more online components. In a year or two, I imagine most of the hit games will consist almost entirely of online play. On the same token, user generated content is also the new hotness. People are realizing that making this is often more fun than playing with things others have made. Whether it's a spraypaint in Counter-Strike, nicknaming your Pokemans, putting your face on an athlete in an EA sports game, or making a Spore Creature, more of what you see in games will be created by the players, not by the game developers.

Will the ESRBs policy of not rating online and user generated content make itself obsolete? Will we end up in a situation where all video games are effectively rated Adults Only because of the potential for Ao user generated content? What if the ESRB decides to rate online games based on the limits placed on the users. I imagine something like Dr. Mario Rx Online could easily get an E rating because players have almost no ability to communicate. Something like Spore might also get an E rating based on the promise of censorship by the publisher, but if that censorship fails for even a second, you've got obscene creatures in an E game, a ruckus will ensue.
  • Then maybe it will take away the ESRB's credibility. I think content ratings are a good heads-up of what sort of potentially offensive material a work contains, but if the ESRB started giving ratings like that to something like Spore I guarantee that the general public, ex parents buying games for their kids, would start to notice. And after that I think the developers would probably stop sending off their games to get rated.
  • Has anyone else gotten the disappearing creatures bug yet? I loaded up the game and some of my creatures were missing from the Sporepedia. I looked up my creatures folder and they were still there. Turns out that it's a bug from the game not shutting down properly. I had to delete some cache files and I found my creatures in the Everything tab in the Sporepedia.

Yes. There is also a rendering bug on the galaxy screen, and there's a lock-up problem when hitting the Windows key too often.
  • I saw a Metal Gear Ray and Rex that were absolutely perfect. This is awesome.

Not very cool, but my mom and sister liked it.
