  • [T]here was no visible loss in quality when I moved it from xvid to iPhone m4v.
Why was there even quality loss before?

Before when I ripped a DVD, put it on the iPhone, then connected the iPhone to the TV with the special cable, it was noticeably worse than the original DVD. It was still great and very watchable, but not perfect. It's still not perfect, but it's noticeably better.

Ah, you played it back via the iPhone to a television. I thought you meant the quality was noticeably worse on the iPhone. You should've expected the video to be worse, since the iPhone has a lower resolution than DVD.

Duh. The point is that the default encoding settings and encoder is better in handbrake now than it was before.

What about filesize? You gain nothing useful if it's bigger than the old settings. On the contrary, you'll be able to store less video on that iPhone, and all you gain is better quality on a television. That defeats the purpose of transcoding it to an iPhone format in the first place.

I have a 16GB. It can hold two entire anime series at once, and then some. Unlike other people who seem to like to carry every single thing around with them everywhere, I actually manage my files. I haven't looked at the file size, so I don't know if it is bigger or smaller. If there is any file size difference, in either direction, it is not large enough to matter.
