  • ...living in abandoned shipping containers...
-> We have the Olympics coming to Vancouver in 2010, and one of the plans to up the spots for workers to stay in Whistler (where the skiing/snow events will be) was to bring in unused shipping containers
...'Poor Impulse Control' tattooed across forehead...
-> I know a few people who should have this warning displayed

  • Just about down to the last hundred pages, I'll probably finish it up this weekend.
  • I bought it when you guys talked about it and oh man...
That book is now on top 3 books ever!!!
    I love the quote:

"Five guys on it. Headed our way." He fireds another round. "Corrections. Four guys on it." Boom.
"Correction, they're not headed our way anymore." Boom. A fireball erupts from the ocean two hundread feet away.
    "Correction. No Boat."
  • I just finished.

I liked it. I'm looking forward to the discussion you two have... What's the ETA on that, anyway?
  • Somewhat on topic: Today's Unshelved covers a different Stephenson novel. I'm tempted to look it up as well.

I bought and read it after Dave and Joel talked about it, especially after they quoted this part. I can't wait for this episode.

I just read that part the other day... needless to say, I cracked up.
  • I read it quite a while back but you have inspired me to pick it up again. I'm about half way through now, I find it difficult to find time with my busy schedule. I am looking forward to the Book club discussion.
  • I'm listening to the audio book version.
  • Ain't it great?
  • Well, damn. I was hoping the show was going to be posted tonight.
  • Nah, this was technically a Mon+Wed week. The PAX episode was extra.

Yeap. Next week is a Tuesday-Thursday. It will likely see the final episode of our PAX coverage. Of course, we still have a few more PAX-related shows to do... ^_~

Fair enough, I just remember Scott mentioning something about if it wasn't put up last week it would be this--perhaps he misspoke or I just misheard/misremembered.

I'm excited to hear the discussion.
  • I read it about a year ago - I have convinced myself that IRL couriers (well, in London at least) fashion themselves after Y.T. in the novel: weird punk hairstyles & neon outfits (what I imagine Y.T. would look like).
  • Finished it yesterday on audiobook, very enjoyable but sometimes overloaded with information (the parts with the Librarian, in particular.).
  • People in the UK / Albion: Neal Stephenson is going to be at Forbidden Planet on the 17th of October! More info at Upcoming.
  • London only, would anyone be interested in doing a Geeknights episode about the UK with me?
  • Listening to the audiobook version, will be done by the weekend.
  • Started reading it yesterday, I'll listen to the episode once I finish it.
  • I got like half-way through and never went back. It was a good book I just got bored I think.

That's paradoxical. If you'd thought it was a good book, you would have kept reading it. If you'd thought it was boring, why continue?

Citizen Kane is a good movie, but it bores the shit out of me.
  • I must say, I'm enjoying Cryptonomicon far more than I did Snow Crash. I think the writing's objectively better, for one thing.

I don't know why I stopped though, it confuses me to this day. I'll probably start reading again once I'm done with all these Halo books.
  • This book had 20% more pedophilia than I could reasonably expect.
  • Don't worry, I'm sure they'll listen to Reason.

Yeah, I got to that point in the novel and went, "Wait, what the fuck?"

Still finished the book though. I really like Snow Crash.
  • I still say it was really poorly written. There were some clever bits, and the whole thing with the librarian was really neat, but the rest of the book struck me as just okay.

Stephenson's problem has been (and, arguably, remains) that he has really great ideas, but kind of sucks at conveying them. I like his books, though, just like I enjoy Harry Potter, despite Rowling's similar problems.
