How do you get your music?

  • Hmmm, Bach, I have not searched for a torrent of his stuff no, I do however got Beethoven's works months, if not a year, ago.
A big problem with downloading classical music like that is there is no definitive recording. If you want to download Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, you get the studio recording, or some live version.

If you want Pachabel's Canon in D, there are so many recordings of it by different orchestras, bands, and comedic guitar playing dudes that there is no definitive recording. This complicates matters when it comes to searching for these things.

That's what I love about "classical" music. The music and the composer matter equally as much as the performer. Every performance is unique, and there will never be a definitive studio version.

This is true, but it raises the barrier to entry. Someone looking to try it out won't have any idea what performances to look for. They won't know which ones are better than others, and it might even cause them to give up before even listening. Someone knowledgeable should make some torrents like ultimate beethoven torrent, ultimate mozart torrent, ultimate bach torrent, etc. Then people who aren't big into classical music, but are cultured enough to have a desire for it, can download all the greats without having to do lots of research.
  • I get it all by Internet means, whether the torrent, websites (gendou anime mp3's), or very recently iTunes for a one off song or some random stuff. I have a few CD's that I rip .

It pretty much goes like this for me:
There is a song that I heard:
    1)Is it on iTunes?
2)How much/how many songs is it on iTunes? If it's more than 3 dollars worth of songs then I go the torrent.
    3) If it's anime music, ie opener or closer than I go to the Gendou site.
  • gendou anime mp3's
Damn, forgot about that one. If I want an album of a japanese Band, such as Ore Ska Band, I also sometimes use eDonkey.
  • Apreche if you want a ultimate torrent, here is the best I could find. It has the most music and most seeders.

That's a real weak list. It was also clearly made by someone who doesn't realize that "Classical" is actually a very specific genre.

I always found most Classical to be too dry and straight-laced. Romantic and Baroque ftw!

*stabs out his eyes* My god does that site look horrible. A question, how is the quality of the mp3's on said site?

    EDIT:
Sorry, but you must first register before you can download.
Ugh, not only is the site ugly, don't they have the first song I look for, don't they allow one to download without registering, AND you have to download each song separately.

  • Gendou is mostly all stuff that comes from elsewhere, too. Nipponsei torrents is where a lot of Gendou's content comes from, but seeding is slow. If you're getting a single track, register to gendou and DL there, it's quick. Gendou's registration doesn't amount to spam emails as far as I can tell, and it takes like 30 seconds.

In other words it's useless. Nipponsei torrents are not slow, at least, never to me. And why would one bother getting a song from a site as Gendou when they can get it directly from the same source they do?
  • *shrug* it depends. Sometimes the old torrents on nipponsei run slow, sometimes they don't. I wouldn't say it's useless, but I've found myself needing it a lot less since I checked out nipponsei after realizing that's where a large portion of gendou content comes from.

Since I don't have a job and my allowance is measly, I have to pirate my music. I either use rapidshare links or torrent it(I found an awesome private tracker

  • Props for the heads up on Nipponsei. I'll probably keep using Gendou until I get used to how everything is laid out.
  • Normally I get things on CD and rip it. I'm always nervous buying too much on iTunes in case DRM issues rear their ugly heads. Except if I need a single song, then iTunes is the easiest and cheapest option.
I've been doing the same thing now, also.
