  • Though a bit of a win in that, the friend who reposted that pic actually debunked it herself. I seem to pick awesome friends.
  • I can't decide quite if it's a fail, or simply hilarious, or both - but people misusing the term "Courtier's reply."

A Courtier's reply is when an opponent in a debate pulls out the "you'd agree with me if only you'd read enough" card.

What I've seen every single time it's come up lately:

"You need to have at least a basic level of knowledge about this topic to be able to competently debate this topic, as it is a topic that includes some important technical elements that it is vital you understand to participate in a useful manner."

    "OHHH! OOHHHH! THAT'S A COURTIER'S REPLY, YOU'RE WRONG!"

So, what we have here, is an accusation regarding an argument that you must understand basic terms to argue competently, arising from a misunderstanding of a term.
  • "you'd agree with me if only you'd read enough"
One of the most useful fallacies in the troll's toolbox. Gonna start using that one to annoy my friends now.

When I saw in high school that was basically the most frustrating thing ever. I was something of a wikipedia addict back then, and I'd end up starting arguments with fucking everyone that I couldn't actually win because my evidence was not on-hand, and I basically had to settle for "look it up when you get home." This made, say, discussing politics with those people super frustrating because they were trying to debate complex things based on false premises, and I always looked like I was ignoring what they were saying.

Fuck, I wish smartphones had been a thing back then. Would have saved me a lot of trouble.

  • I love fact-checking people while they're in the process of making a flawed argument. There's literally no faster way to slow ignorance's roll than showing someone a screen that proves them wrong.

I'm adding that to my "How to be an effective hater" lecture.

This is a big problem we have with the first years at uni. What they are saying is cool and an interesting interpretation. That is till you call them on where they got their sources from and their response is Wikipedia. They are pretty much ignored after that.
  • My girlfriend's brother was flabbergasted when he tried to explain to this guy he worked with why you could not cite Wikipedia and the guy just didn't understand or see the issue with doing so.

I have friends who mark first year essays the amount of times people have copy and pasted from wikipedia with out even changing the text is more common than you would think.

  • I wonder if it's laziness or if people just don't understand how Wikipedia works. Neither is really a desirable answer.
  • I suspect that it is both. There are certainly a lot of people in which it is obvious they have just read a wiki and are as such a master of the subject. Likewise there are lots who forget essay deadlines and panic.
  • I've been in a multi-month battle with learning the guitar. My dad gave me his old acoustic (which was unused, since he got an RSI almost immediately after he bought it; writing is not without injury), and I tried to learn some Dylan. Since then, I have been unable to get it to make the sounds I want it to, and (unlike previous instruments I've played) I can't figure out why. This frustration is why progress is so slow.

My current theory is that the guitar was out of tune. Unfortunately, I won't know this because in the process of tuning it I broke my e-string.

Dude, invest in a good tuner. They're super cheap on Amazon - you can pick up a good Korg tuner for about Nine bucks at the moment. Fifteen bucks if you want a fancier one.

    Nine bucks.

    Fifteen.

It'll make you life so much easier*. Also, try adjusting the action a bit - It should be a little easier to get better sound if you lower the action some. I know how it feels, man, but keep on. It's 100% awesome when you finally manage to get some good sounds out. I think. I'm still working on that bit.

*- May or may not apply to life outside of tuning your guitar.

A lot of times the action is a big problem with old acoustic guitars that make them hard to play for beginners. If it has a truss rod or, less common for acoustic guitars, saddles then you can fix it, but if not then you're kind of out of luck with an old guitar whose neck has weakened and bowed.

  • I have hit a mental wall with work. I just can't seem to do anymore documentation.
  • I had the same problem last night with referencing. I feel your pain.
  • I think work is giving me an anxiety disorder. More the crazy moving target that my boss lays out with documentation.

    My condolences.

She'll be waiting for you in the afterlife, I'm sure.
  • Guy called us "pathetic" because we didn't give him a point for an answer in trivia. He was partially right so I told him to ask the quizmaster to contest it. He was being a fucking dick of course.

    Bummer.

    Here:
  • Was woken at 3:40 in the morning to a drunken guy shouting to be let back into his house. When this did not work he procceded to try and knock the door down whilst shouting at anything that was near him. This carried on till five in the morning, he was very nearly flensed by the lovely Indian family next door. This man has now qualified to be River Cobblered. Also early lectures on no sleep is not fun.
  • The Huffington Post is now officially on my list of shit rags I avoid reading and distrust as a source.
  • It wasn't before? It always has been on mine. What made you change your mind now?
  • When I was in debate using sources from there was a bit shifty since you could find things on that website to support some absurd arguments.
  • It wasn't before? It always has been on mine. What made you change your mind now?
Agreed. Curious as to what pushed you over the edge.

  • There's NO pleasing my mother.
