Wow this looks like an interesting subreddit (the ask science one), I assumed and generalised incorrectly.

There's a bunch of partner ones for different fields, too. The trick is that the mods basically rule with an iron fist.

My favorite is /r/askhistorians. I've learned more from that subreddit than any of my history classes, and more than some history books.

I dreamed of having a hotel room for PAX shared with Rym and Scott.

It is, to be sure, the dream of many.
Yep, I've had the same dream.

I have discovered why so many people tell you to avoid electric heat in residences.

I have discovered why my landlady turned her electric heating system off at the breaker rather than just turning it all the way down.

I have more than a little to say about his recent antics, but I'll save it for another time, lest I don't make it to the shops in time to buy food.

But, on a lighter note, the BBC has a strange interpretation of the Chinese zodiac:

OMG this is priceless, I didn't know American satire was so good, I laughed for a good 2 minutes.
  • Jesus, America. REALLY?! Fuck, I hate my countrymen so much 90+% of the time.

  • I love how so many people bashing the Coke commercial have such a poor grasp of English themselves...
  • Oh what-ever. For every crazy racist Twitter user, there's thousands more who're just as appalled as you.
  • Just because I live in a world where the idiots have a voice doesn't mean I wish they did not at times possess that voice.
  • I remember seeing that commercial and saying to my friends, "oh man, twitter is gonna have a stroke." :P

Yep the second we say it my wife and I said "this is going to be all over Winger News tomorrow."

Although, finding racist reactions on Twitter is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

  • Concerts being missed this and last month due to age restrictions:
    Evan Greer
    Saintseneca
    Possibly Blair Crimmins
    Movits
    Caravan Palace.

Why does the club scene hate me? It's not even a drinking thing for most of them -- that I would understand -- because most of these are 18+. Why?
  • Ah, Caravan Palace. They're cool.
  • I've learned that many venues' insurance won't cover minors unless they pay a lot more. Some nerdy events in New York have had similar problems.

Actually the club scene LOVES you Greg, you are hip and willing to see awesome shows on a whim. The problem is that the insurance companies hate you.

Probably has something to do with the fact that there's no legal distinction between a 16 yr old, 75% responsible adult and a 4 yr dumbass that will trip and fall on anything.
  • What do they have to insure? What are the legal distinctions between me now and me in six months when I'm 18?
  • Venue insurance. If I run a shop, and someone trips over nothing and breaks their arm, or gets molested and sues over "lack of security" or somesuch nonsense, I would be on the hook for effectively unlimited legal fees.
  • Teens, as a group, are (or are perceived to be) impulsive and prone to drama and inflammatory situations, so it's not too surprising that insurers would shy away. Especially in the US, when kids are involved, reason kinda goes out the window.

Of course, there should be lots of underwriting tables supporting these sorts of decisions.. dunno about that as I never worked in Property/Casualty insurance.

The same distinction that means that you can't buy a pack of smokes now, but can in six months. Crazy bullshit.
  • So the largest MTG community website around, MTGSalvation, moved into some sort of gaming website network called Curse, which I had never heard of before. The result is that now the website is blocked at my workplace. Boo for workplace internet restrictions and boo for this move.
  • I never really understood what people meant when they complained that men (or others) are overstepping or overestimating their "rights" to a woman's body when they make observations about it. I mean, they're not physically touching anyone. They're not presuming to take any liberties with that woman by commenting on the internet, right?

Well I've been looking around on DeviantArt a lot lately because I want to commission some artwork for my podcast website, and I happened to stray into the cosplay section because there are some insanely talented cosplayers on there and the ways they come up with to depict various characters can be truly amazing.

Anyway, the pure, unfiltered, seemingly unmoderated bile that gets spewed at female cosplayers on that site... oh my freaking god. I understand what people mean now when they say that. The things that miserable misanthropic shit-heels think they are entitled to say to people who are sharing themselves in a positive, productive way... holy shit.

Having a bad ram stick took me a while to find as it's very different from other errors.

  • There is something profound about this picture.

I'm not a fan of Patriot RAM myself, these days I only go for the lifetime warranty sticks.
  • My first serious build I used Kingston RAM and everything worked great. Then I tried other, cheaper ram for every other build, and I always seemed to have issues getting the system running just right. With my latest build I have returned to Kingston and shit is working great again.
  • I've always been very happy with Micron/Crucial RAM myself.
  • edited February 2014
I use Crucial or Corsair whenever I can help it.
