Thinking About Going Offline From Dec. 1 to Jan. 1

I'll be going offline at the end of this week. But there are a few exceptions:
    • 1. Email. This is how my school communicates with me, so it must stay an open channel of communication. SonicDHgmail.com
    • 2. Skype. This is mainly for anyone from here to contact me. Skype username: SonicDH.
    • 3. Webcomics.
    • 4. Online access for school or work related needs.
    And that's it.
That being said, help me name my new computer! It's not "new", but I just finished building it.
It's a Pentium 3 733mhz with 4 harddrives, a cd burner, and 256MB of ram. Its gonna run Windows XP Pro and will probably serve as a file/web/game server. An anime name would be preferred. ^_^ It's temporary name will be Konata, because of how temperamental the IDE cables were. I had to replace the 80 pin cables with 40 pin ones.

If it's a Pentium 3, and it's being a server, you're much better off running Windows 2000 or Linux on it. You will get much better performance than with XP.

You know, I tried Linux on a couple other machines, but getting a remote desktop connection from a windows machine was a pain in the ass. Even using VNC it would keep on dropping the connection. Since there's nothing on the other harddrives yet, I'll install 2000 on one of them and give it a go. Though, If I'm not mistaken, Windows 2000 support has been moved into Microsoft's Extended support phase lifecycle.

  • What? I use TightVNC and it works flawlessly over a wired network.
  • That being said, help me name my new computer! It's not "new", but I just finished building it.
Bob the Build PC? Sorry, I thought off the name Bob, then Bob the Builder, since you build the darned thing. Other names could be: Thing-Ma-Bob, Server-Bob, WednesBob. Seriously, no idea.
  • I've substantially cut back on my internet use, and I've never been happier. My work has improved, my social life has improved, my family life has improved. Just about everything I can think of has improved without the distraction of the internet.

Should you stop entirely? No. That's no better than using the internet too much.

For me, it was realizing that I fell victim to the convenience of the internet. It was just so darned easy to get what I wanted - but most of it was not needed, and came at the expense of other areas of my life. Once I realized that, cutting back was incredible easy. Increased happiness followed as I had time for other aspects of my life. I still have the internet for my needs. So I don't feel like I've given anything up. I just got rid of all the stuff that I didn't really need and/or appreciate in the first place.
It's really a weird thing, when I think about it. There was a time when I had a twitter window open all the time. I'd be tweeting and responding to tweets throughout the day. I did enjoy it, and I did get something out of it. One day I just stopped opening that window. I don't miss it, and I don't even remember or have an urge to go back there. If I don't miss it, then it obviously wasn't that important.
I told you so. 99% of Twitter activity is narcissistic dribble.

Sonic, that's my life pretty much...
I can't stand the people at my high school!
I had to take a geography class because 75% of the kids could not locate: Russia, China, Japan, USA, Canada, and Mexico on a map...
Also in my AP World History class, I was the only who could locate Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on a map, and I was the only
person who knew why we are in Iraq and in Afghanistan...
I just can't stand the people at my school!!!

    I'll be back.

    ...
    I am so weak. >_<
I got a "new" car today (a 92 civic LS) and I automatically started googling for ways to tune it. Next thing I knew, I was on digg clicking through all the stories.
    Not even a whole workweek!

  • I decided that Sonic had a good idea, so I am going off the internet for a month in order to try and get my projects together. Since it is winter, I have been all hikkikomori-esque on the weekends, and I need to re-energize myself. Rym, please set me to "Get a Job."

If anyone needs to contact me for any reason, you can mail gomidog (at) frontrowcrew.com.
Oh Bother... Well now I can't just quit. Crap. Oh well, here we go again...*Offline*
  • ...December to January would be a good time to avoid the Internet. You won't miss anything.
Yes! Mac World! If that concerns you.

    I'm back.

    I'm home.

    What I've learned:

When I run, the internet follows.
Almost everyday I was supposedly offline, I had to go and do research for one thing or another. My dad needed a fileserver for our home network. I decided to use
linux with a samba share and I had to go online to figure out how to make everything work properly. I ended up learning a lot about linux and how it works, but if I wasn't editing .conf files in pico I was on the ubuntu forums or on google looking for commands for one thing or another.

When the internet gives chase, it is a mean son of a bitch.
My cell phone has an rss reader which I use for downloading podcasts. Somehow it got into its head to download every episode of Friday Night Party Line and as many episodes of Geeknights as it could until it finally filled up my 4GB internal storage. Well, of course I was never short of entertainment, but every time Rym And Scott talked about their things of the day or news, My instinct was to either go to my laptop to check it out or try viewing it in opera mobile on my phone. Cruel.

Whether or not this past month has changed me at all, I can't be certain. But at least I know one thing.

I can't escape the grasping tendrils of the internet. It follows me everywhere, no matter what I do. My fate is sealed. Save yourselves.

  • Sonic, don't worry. Once the zombie apocalypse comes around you won't have time to build a file-server for your father. So look forward to that, your last hope of freeing yourself from the internet. The zombie apocalypse, what is it not good for. (other than humanity)
  • I can't escape the grasping tendrils of the internet. It follows me everywhere, no matter what I do. My fate is sealed. Save yourselves.
If you are manly enough you can become a warrior monk in the Himalayas and that will help you escape the internet.

But then there'll come along some guy who not only escaped the internet, but has a fucking nuke. If it weren't for that fucking nuke, I might have a chance to be the most manly of internet escapees.
  • but has a fucking nuke.
Is it embedded in his skull programmed to set off if he is killed? xD
  • Sonic, what are your plans for the future? Use the internet as more of a tool? Go back to it being a great time wasting device?

Certainly this past experience has changed my usage of the internet. Keeping that in mind, I think my usage will definitely be more utilitarian than it was before my experiment. One of the episodes of Geeknights I listened to was the one where Rym and Scott have lost connection to the internet. When they would go to work, they found themselves being very much more efficient with their 'net usage. Drawing from their experience as well as my own, I think a nice middle ground would be to scale back my internet usage to maybe a few hours a day.

There were a few sites I really missed, Hulu and this forum among them. One particularly infuriating experience was when Scott was talking about the R2D2 robots doing their Gay Gay Dance. Let me tell you something about those robots. I hate those robots. during the last holiday season, I was working at Sharper Image selling those robots. They are stupid as hell. Their voice recognition capabilities are so terrible that holiday music playing in the background wreaks havoc with their ability to recognize commands. That dance is preprogramed. The only programability those stupid bots have is telling it to follow a path you give it. The cup holder it has is useless. Its not strong enough to carry any reasonably sized soft drink. I hate those stupid robots.

    Dialogue with R2d2 toy:
    Hey R2!
    *ACK beep*
    Game Mode
    *ACK beep*
    Spin the droid
    *ERR Beep*
    sigh...Hey R2.
    *ACK beep*
    Reset System
    *ACK Beep*
    Hey R2.
    *ACK beep*
    Game Mode
    *ACK beep*
    Dance Program
    *Err Beep*
    Sigh...Look customer, It's got a cupholder.

  • Haha. Stupid droid.

I'm back too, for anyone who cares.

I didn't fully quit the internet. I just quit mindless browsing and constant socialization upon it. I think I got a lot done these past few weeks.
