Well I'm quite pleased about this. I was contemplating an E8500 on an Asus P5Q before I got here and seeing them mentioned favourably in the thread only improves matters.
I have a RAM question though. Is it worth the premium for branded, matched-pair and heat-sunk RAM or is there really no benefit over generic?

I suggest you get a pair of 2GB sticks. This is important because it means your motherboard will enable dual-channel when you have a pair like that. The brand, the heat sinks, etc. don't really matter. The timings matter a little bit, but not enough for any normal person to notice a difference.
Can you be more specific about what to look for in picking a case? Is there some way to roughly assess things like airflow and ease of use directly from a product's description or do you have to rely on reviews? The only thing that jumps out at me is power supply on top vs on bottom, but I don't really know what effect that would have. I am considering this one, purely based on price, rating, and being compatible with my motherboard. Assuming that I don't want more HDDs or optical drives than this case allows for, is this a good buy?
So I have $1,000 to spend on a computer. It's going to be a Windows gaming machine pretty much, but I also want some hard drive space. Can anyone help me out? Even just adapting Scott's old build would be helpful.
I realize that $1000 is sort of overkill, but since I have the money to spend what should I upgrade?

Just go with a cheap 1TB Seagate hard drive, or maybe Western Digital. You can get one for pretty cheap.
No fucking idea. It'd just be better to look for yourself and collect all the current information in terms of prices/performance ratios as they are now instead of whatever they were when Scott made that build.
