In my opinion, Cloverfield was a return to a style of filming that is only now seeing the resurgence that I believe, should have had a long time ago. No, no, not the monster movie genre (that thrives elsewhere), the guerilla-style film; which started with (as far as I can remember) The Blair Witch Project. While it is your opinion as to whether or not you like it, you should at least give it credit for trying something different instead of the same style of filming all the time.

  • Cloverfield's shaky-cam made me nauseous, but it was a good film overall. However, I think District 9 put the technique to better use.

Agreed. Though I've never seen Cloverfield, District 9 pulled it off top-notch.

  • Then again, other than the shift to Black Hawk Down towards the end, there's very little that isn't top-notch about District 9.
  • I saw District 9 on my last flight and really enjoyed it. I didn't see many similarities between it and Cloverfield, except if you count "shaky camera" as a technique. One used found amateur footage throughout, and the other used a documentary device to bookend the action. Both films were a lot of fun.

Also, I know I've been traveling enough when I can't for the life of me think where my last flight was from and where it landed.

    Not really.
