9/11

  • Oh, you went to SVA too? Neat! The West side building always felt far away from the real action. My building's people hated your buildings people too (except for me, I really loved your side because that's where most of the illustrators/animators were). It's nice you ended up being with your mom on that day. I found an old acquaintance from high school but we didn't talk much.
  • It wasn't really the people I held animousity toward, just the building. Nearly every class I had in that building was at 9AM, across town from my dorm and started during the coldest months of the spring semester. My fondest memories of the west side building are those of thawing and falling asleep in its cafeteria.

I'm really glad I ended up with my mom that day. She was so strong and level-headed. I felt like we became very close that day, and it gave me even greater respect and appreciation for her.
  • 9/11 will be one day cease to haunt the national memory. One day we shall have an entire generation who weren't there to see it. They will see it as history, nothing more. They will likely shrug off the day, just like people don't fall over themselves to commemorate Pearl Harbor. Some will, but not everyone. Frankly, I can't wait to see this happen. So many people, sadly, use it as a crutch.

Or they attack the innocent victims of it. I had a video of Glenn Beck doing just that here, but pulled it because it was actually being propagated by some lunatic conspiracy theorist who is also a Conservative Christian activist.

Hey guys I agree with Scott and Nine on this one. I used to be a little broken up hearing about all the families and their sad tales. Now I care a bit less because bigger shit is happening in the world.
And Diagoras of Thebes is right. People will eventually start growing up who didn't witness 9-11, and they will care a lot less about it, and the "hype" will fade.

But here's some more slightly distasteful 9-11 shit:
    Knock Knock?
    Who's there?
    9-11.
    9-11 who?
    YOU SAID YOU'D NEVER FORGET!

  • Speaking of things that straddle the line between tasteful and trolling, 8 years ago yesterday in the GBS subforum on Something Awful: the World Trade Center is on fire.
  • Dkong, you might mention that this ad was rejected by the WWF.

I would have mentioned that had I known that. I simply got the image from a friend.

I agree with that, much like Kennedy getting shot for my parents and Pearl Harbor before that. Time does fade these things, but for now it's still pretty real for me.

It's not that the hype fades, it's just the first hand observers die off. I mean my grandfather still talks about Pearl Harbor and my parents can still tell me where they were when Kennedy was shot. It's just as time goes on there are other events of significance occur (and crowd the Hype) and the people who actually were around dwindle with time.. (Not many people alive today that were around during the first world war)...

True, I be rambling to my grandkids about 9/11 and the crazy cars we had that were propelled by controlled explosions and we actually had to drive ourselves. ^_^
  • In the classroom...minding my own business because I was 12.
