There's a guy on LATFH I am about 80% sure I saw at Lollapalooza. He was spending the time as people were leaving Friday night jumping out of bushes and attempting to push people down an adjacent muddy hill. This fellow, as I recall:

I don't care about the hipster, that's one cute dog.
The kids in TF2 definitely do not enjoy logging into broken servers to grind out the achievements: they enjoy the boons they get from said achievements. They log into these servers and grind because they want to skip past the non-fun part.
Though I personally hate the achievement->weapon system that they implemented in TF2, this statement is far from true.
There are plenty of communities/servers that have made whole events out of these "farming" sessions. It's fun, it's coordinated, and everyone has a good time goofing around while working to get these Achievements. It becomes a social event, and though the ultimate excitement comes from actually receiving the new weapons, the act of getting them as a group can be quite enjoyable.
