What confuses me is that Saionji knows what's up with the castle the entire time -- which makes no sense with his character. "It's a trick of the light" he says, before spending the rest of the series trying to reach it.
He just happens to say that. There's no way he actually knows.
Well, there is one way. He's so crazy/stupid/messedup that he knows the truth but keeps believing.

He didn't know what he was saying. Touga probably said that to him, and he parrots it to others in the guise of wisdom.
