That's not true, they do. However, what they cannot do is make up for a generic plot.
And piss-poor writing on top of that.
And Beating the audience over the head with stupid, contrived aesops about "Millitary BAD! Capitalism BAD! Nature GOOD! Tolerance GOOD!" on top of that.
Edit - Side note, I think it's pretty class that Sandra Bullock showed up to accept her Razzie for "All About Steve" and even gave a pretty funny, cool, and chilled out speech - not condescending or angry, she just took it for what it was, a Criticism on that particular role, rather than an insult directed at her, like some do.
You all do realize that "unobtanium" is the kind of jargon a military or paramilitary organization would use for a material like that, regardless of its "real" name, right?
There are many valid criticisms of the movie, but "unobtanium" makes more sense than many people realize: it's just an easy thing to call attention to.

It sounds stupid in real life, too.
However, you're right; "unobtanium" was the least egregious act of mediocre writing in Avatar.

A friend of the family calls pornography "unobtanium" because he can't get any of the "interesting" stuff overseas while on active duty.
First I've heard of it, though to be fair, It's two different Military forces. That, and he musn't be so good at the bartering, because my old boys(edit for clarification - Some old mates who are still in) don't have any trouble - there is certainly a reason that some particular places earn the name "The Bat Cave", when you consider the different slang.
TRON: Legacy wasn't nominated for Visual Effects or Score.
Yeah, it was nominated for Sound Editing. I've come to the conclusion that the Oscar for sound editing is really the Oscar for best nerd movie. Just look at the list of past winners on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Sound_Editing Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Robocop, Batman, King Kong, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, E.T..
The only movie on there I think actually had exceptional sound editing was Master & Commander. That's also a nerd movie, by the way. But I saw that shit in the theater, and no movie I have ever seen has had such amazing sound. The canon fire was just unbelievable.
At the risk of sounding like a stupid fanboy, does the Academy have a problem with Chris Nolan or something? He keeps conspicuously not getting nominated for Best Director.

Well other than Inception and perhaps The Prestige, what other movies do you think he should have been nominated for Best Director?

That was a damn solid movie from all sides. Even the broad ones.
because nobody has openly facepalmed at the broad side comment yet I must acknowledge it, and sigh.

I'm not familiar with The Ghost and the Darkness. Should this be something on my "to watch" list?
I am disgusted that Aaron Sorkin got nominated for writing The Social Network. That movie was one of the best of the year because of fantastic acting, directing, cinematography, music, etc. but Sorkin raped the story to make it fit his viewpoints. When cornered, he comes clean and admits that he made shit up, but I understand what happens in Hollywood every day. What bothered me was how his changes were made because he cannot grasp the motivation behind creating technology. Listen to... Sorkin's interview on Creative Screenwriting Podcast. He comes off as a total douche. He's on the record as being anti-tech, and took a few choice words and spun them into a tale of the nerd whose sad motivation was to impress a girl. He wrote the whole script while looking down his nose at anyone who has ever lost themselves in a tech project for no other reason than simply because it was cool, interesting and exciting.
The lion monster movie known as "Jaws with Paws". It's not great.

It is a fucking awesome script, and has some of the most exciting and funny dialogue I've ever heard. The opening scene had me gripped, and it was just two people chatting in a bar. I had tears in my eyes at the very end, something I wouldn't have imagined one minute before the very end.
I suppose if he did the best possible job anyone could do if they set out to write a condescending screenplay, then he is an incredibly talented asshole who deserves an award? Not disagreeing with you here. The realization just makes sad.
Anyway, here my predictions in the categories that I think matter the most, in my opinion. All my comments about the nomination will go below my predictions.
Best Picture - The Tree of Life
Best Actor in Leading Role - Jean Dujardin in "The Artist"
Best Actress in Leading Role - Rooney Mara in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
Best Actor in Supp. Role - Nick Nolte in "Warrior"
Best Actress in Supp. Role - Octavia Spencer in "The Help"
Best Animated Film - Rango
Best Cinematography - Hugo
Best Art Direction - Hugo
Best Costumes - The Artist
Best Director - Michel Hazanavicius for "The Artist"
Best Film Editing - Thelma Schoonmaker for "Hugo"
Best Original Score - The Artist
Best Original Song - Man Or Muppet?
Best Visual Effects - Hugo
Best Adapted Screenplay - Moneyball (If only because of the fact that Aaron Sorkin was able to translate a rigid, non-fiction book such as Moneyball into a narrative, which is really impressive.)
Best Original Screenplay - Margin Call
The only thing I'm mad about (but not entirely surprised by) is that Melancholia got no nods at all in any category (not even Best Foreign Film); and Melancholia was my personal favorite film of last year. Don't know what Extremely Loud and Moneyball are doing in Best Picture. Don't get me wrong, they were good, but not Best Picture good. I'm also incredibly surprised that Dragon Tattoo didn't get a nod for Best Picture. Another thing I was surprised by was that Jessica Chastain got a nom for Best Supporting Actress in The Help? She was okay, but not good enough for an Academy Award nomination.
I hear lots of people HATE the Tree of Life. This year had a real problem of films being intentionally slow or having no 3rd Act. It wasn't a great year for Oscar movies, with a few exceptions because stuff like War Horse, Albert Nobbs and Iron Lady which have really shining moments in terms of actors or scenery, but movie in general is forgettable.
This is a pretty "bleh" year in terms of nominations, it feels like the Golden Globe nods except with more WTFs. (Like EL&IC). Seriously, McCarthy getting nominated for Bridesmaids? Puss in Boots over Arthur Christmas, KFP2 or Tintin?

I hear the best thing about Melancholia is actually Kirsten Dunst's role. Like, replace Glenn Close and it'd be a great list. There's in general, there's too much narrow focus and lots of snubbing against: Drive, MI4, HP2, Shame, 50/50, and the biggest one imo, is no recognition to Andy Serkis.
Fixed that for you. Also, the Adventures of Tintin was motion capture, which makes it not animation and not able to be nominated for a best animated feature Oscar.
Well...the only thing that makes the Oscars bearable is the fact that Hugo is rightfully getting a large amount of nominations (the only categories in which it got nominated that I personally disagree with are best picture and best screenplay), because next to Melancholia and Drive; Hugo was one of my favorite films of the year.
I hear lots of people HATE the Tree of Life.
They're all wrong...it's so opulent and beautiful.

Yep. She practically reinvented her career with this movie and she rightfully earned the Best Actress Award at Cannes, in my opinion.
Puss in Boots over Arthur Christmas, KFP2 or Tintin?
Rango will beat it, I'm telling you. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It is one of the first mainstream CGI films that is outright for adults (only because adults will both find it funny and understand it) and I want more films of it's ilk to be made in the future.

All your reasons for hating it? Irrelevant!
