  • What happened last time? And the time before that?
Word. I'm not giving anyone my money until it's out and there is a consensus that it's good.

And notice how I said "good" and not "not shitty." I am not buying it if it's only not shitty.
  • The game seems alright from the demos I've played of it.
  • Gluttons for punishment.
  • Aight, so Sonic Generations is out and the reviews have been decent, mostly 8/10s. Those who preordered it, what's your verdict?

I'm curious, but I've been burned too much to spend any amount of moneys. Sonic really just needs a Bionic Commando: Rearmed treatment. Why can't companies figure this out? Make the exact same fucking game that was originally popular. Imagine if Nintendo made a game that was the same as Super Metroid only new map, bigger, maybe some more items, and 2.5D like Shadow Complex. Or if SEGA did the same with Sonic. I would pay all the moneys, and it might even make me forget about ponies temporarily.

Ah, the Steam release date isn't 'till Thursday, so I guess the preorder people wouldn't know yet. Unless someone here got it on 360/PS3.

  • Sonic Generations is getting some pretty lackluster reviews from certain sites (6.75, 3/5, etc.). Reading the reviews it seems like it's basically everything involving modern Sonic that is getting the harshest criticism. Imagine that. I'm hoping SEGA intended this game as some sort of experiment, and will take this as a sign to do away with Greeneyes McGangly forever.

But, even the old Sonic games weren't that good. At best they were just ok platformers. I've never understood where people's love towards those games come from. Nostalgia?

The old Sonic games weren't any sort of masterpieces in game design, they were just really fucking fun. It made you feel like you were very powerful. I think that in terms of any sort of objective quality, they're overrated, but that doesn't mean I don't love them as much -- if not more -- than everyone else.

    Also, relevant:

  • Gah, I should have pre-ordered it for the discount. Whelp, nevermind.

Looking at what else was around at the time, Sonic was actually pretty damn good. No other game made you actually feel FAST.

  • I'm guessin' y'all didn't play Sonic Advance.
  • I played Sonic Advance.
  • I like Sonic Advance. It's worth at least a download if you guys need a "new" Sonic game to play. The DS version of Sonic Color's is pretty fun too. I've heard good things about Rush and Rush Adventure but I haven't played them yet. Lately most of the good Sonic's have been on Handhelds.
  • Also, I pre-ordered Sonic Generations on Steam, so I'll get it and probably start playing over the weekend, if I can.
  • I played Sonic Advance.
I was more referring to the people who are saying they don't understand why Sonic games are good.

Also, the Sonic Rush games very solid, and I've heard Sonic Colors DS was made by the same people as Rush and is basically a continuation of the series.

Illusion of fastness. Every level had some part where you ran very fast and did some loops, but those were there just to show off, in those parts you just pressed left. Remove those parts and it was quite slow mediocre platformer.

Also I've only played the old 2d Sonics and little bit the DS ones. I've just seen most nostalgia toward the old ones.

  • Part of the satisfaction of playing a Sonic game comes from getting good enough to run through a level without hitting a wall or having to slow down. It's like running through the first few levels of SMB, skipping and bouncing perfectly across Goomba heads, except with that sort of playstyle intentionally built into the game.

    This.

  • Yeah, Sonic is a lot like Super Meat Boy except in Super Meat Boy you die where in Sonic you just stop moving.

So if you took a quite slow and mediocre platformer and added fun parts, what do you get? A fun game!

And you are seeing people get nostalgic about the oldest of the Sonic games because.... they are old.

  • I am old. I am two years older than my namesake.

Tommy from rugrats, if he was a real dude, would be 21 this year.

Also there is no underwater levels in Super Meat Boy.

Also Sonic, It's not that you are old, but your namesake is young.

Yep - I scoped it out, and apparently the first episode of the series is His First anniversary birthday, and was aired on August 11, 1991. So, considering he was a year old on that date 20 years ago, that'd make him 21 as of August 11 this year.

So Green Man Gaming is doing a deal where you can get the Steam version of Sonic Generations for $25 if you use a coupon code. Cheap enough that I decided to check it out after all. I forget the one that I used, but I think GMG10-PERCE-NTOFF works.

The PC version is very well optimized from what I've seen so far. High resolution, 60 FPS and the potential for mods.

I'm liking the PC version. It's pretty good. Got my roommate's PS3 controller running on my PC to make the controls easier.
It is stupid though, they just ported the Xbox 360 version, down to the tutorials displaying pictures of the Xbox buttons.
It is fun, though. Controls aren't quite tight enough, but the levels are pretty much fun.

    .
Most games do that. Largely because you can do the XBox 360 controller on windows, and it's fairly standard.

    Plus, XNA.

I know, I'm a coder and I know XNA. But you could at least change the pictures so people playing the PC version without a controller (like I was at first) will know what buttons we're supposed to press.

Because the thing is, you still have to make a separate code project to run the game on PC vs. Xbox 360, it's just most of the code should very easily transfer. They could have someone making the PC version change those tutorial pictures.
