MP3 players

  • I have a lot of music, and am a go-to guy for music suggestions. So, I like having my full library on-the-go. I'm sure I could adapt if I absolutely had to, but for the time being, let's just take for granted that I need something with decent space.

Assuming I need, say, 40GB absolute minimum, are there *any* high-capacity MP3 players that work, that aren't iPods?
  • Professor, recommend me some good do-wop and motown.
  • I think I have 15 GB of progressive post-black ambient noise metal alone.
Like ScoJo said, I don't collect music anymore. I can usually listen to what I want on demand legally (LastFM, Pandora, etc...) or pirate it as needed. I only keep things that would be difficult to get again, or things that are particularly memorable.
  • Is there any way to access Pandora in Canada? All the methods I've tried to foil region protection have failed, historically.
  • LastFM, Pandora
This is so true. Because I have an iPhone, not an iPod, I can stream music no matter where I am. Android users can do this as well. It really decreases the need to carry mp3s. Last.FM just decided to charge money for mobile usage, so I deleted them. But Pandora is still good as well as every normal streaming radio station out there. I've been making frequent use of the di.fm iPhone app.

Or what about some chiptunes that is not typical and repetitive unce unce unce but more akin to the sound of say, Tim Follins?
  • Are there any high-capacity MP3 players on the market, other than the iPod classic and the Zune? I'd be considering the Zune, except that I can't seem to find any non-HD models, and the HD seems to be bogged down with DRM and terrible software that you have to go through to put files on it.

I don't collect music either. I download a whole shitload of stuff with frequency. If I like it, it stays and I listen to it again periodically. If I really like it, it goes into regular rotation. If I don't like it, it gets deleted.

I have like 70 gigs of music that I like.

I would use Last.fm, but y'know, they charge for mobile right now. Pandora doesn't have enough stuff that I want to listen to. Let's also not forget that, every now and then, I actually have to pursue back channels to get the stuff I like. Also, most of the stuff I like isn't readily available even when it's popular. Forget trying to find it two years later.
If you can't keep something for every mood in 16GB, you are one moody mother fucker
This isn't like being in a "rock" mood or a "metal" mood. My moods are very very specific. "Right now, I want to listen to [this version] of [this song] on [this album] by [this artist]." I will not be satisfied until that specific need is filled.

EDIT: Just to add: Sometimes, I can only find something in FLAC or a very high bitrate. So, some of mp3's are larger than they strictly need to be.

    Sounds like a psychological problem.

    Transcode that shit.

I'm picky and obsessive. I also listen to my music very, very closely, and recognize the subtle differences that make each song unique. So, sometimes, a particular thing won't do it. It just won't be right.
    Transcode that shit.
Yeah, but I already have the stuff, and plenty of hard drive space. There's really no need for me to transcode it, except to possibly fit more onto my iPod.

  • I'm with TheWhaleShark and ProfPangloss on this one. Pandora is rarely able to satisfy my musical needs, and it's much better to have all of my music on my mp3 player.

Grooveshark > Pandora > Last.fm. That being said, I have a 160GB iPod Classic to manage all of my portable library needs, and most of my favorite music is on my desktop as MP3s.

  • Grooveshark was unable to locate Diesto, Borean Dusk, or Black Sun. Last.fm could at least locate Borean Dusk.

So upload them. That's the beauty of it. Then, others can discover them as well.

  • I get to take the easy way out. The computer I work on is also my personal computer, so all my music is always right there whether I'm in the office or at home :D

I understand the want to have your whole collection on you in the form of a small player though. There are lots of times when I want to listen to a specific CD, and that could one of hundreds that I have. Having a high capacity iPod saved me in college. These days, I still have an iPod Touch, but I only load podcasts or very specific music onto it that I want to have when in the car or practicing drums.

I can't find Borean Dusk for download. Last.fm only has a page for them.

So you couldn't have it on a mobile device, anyway, unless you pay for Last.fm Mobile.

Yeah, but at least they've heard of the band.

By the way, if anyone can actually find Borean Dusk, I'll reward you with various sexual favors.
  • Grooveshark is driven by user uploads. The reason they haven't "heard" of them is because no one's uploaded their music, yet. Also, which Black Sun are you talking about?

    These guys, from Glasgow, Scotland.

Found it. How do you want me to get it to you?

Where the fuck did you find it? Send a link? Upload to Grooveshark?
  • Grooveshark it. I want to hear this.
  • Damn, this shit is fucking AWESOME. It's uploading right now.

Sketchy rapidshare-like sites are surprisingly useful.

Any favorites? I do have some stuff that my usual torrent sites don't usually have.

I suppose going to /mu/ and browsing /rs/ is a possibility. Also, a great way to get a virus.

Oh, and by the way, Borean Dusk is super fucking awesome. Uploading to Grooveshark right now. Go look for it in about 15 minutes.

EDIT: OK, scratch that. Upload issues.

EDIT 2: Oh, well look at that. They put up a website recently, and you can listen to the entire album for free.

That means I'm buying a T-shirt from these guys, because they're cool.

    I just use Filestube.
  • For some reason, the quote function won't work, but a possible solution for Prof. Pangloss would be to get any of the recent generation Sandisk players, the Clip+, the Fuze, the View, or the Fuze+ and add a micro SD card to add the amount you want. Amazon is selling 32 gig micro SD cards for about $70 and you can get it cheaper if you want to go with a non Amazon seller or a no name brand on the card. Personally, I would reccomend the Clip+ or the original Fuze, though both top out at 8 gigs so you'd just barely be hitting that 40 gig number you wanted.
  • I would reccomend the Clip+ or the original Fuze
I have an original 8 gig clip, and I'm really happy with it. The only drawback with mine is that it has no microsd slot but 8 gigs is really fine for me anyway. If you're not going to watch much video, I'd recommend getting a clip plus and 16 or 32 gig microsd card. The original Fuze is a nice device from what I've heard. My mom has the sansa e250 which is basically one model before it, and the thing works great. I don't know about the Fuze+ but Sansas are usually pretty good devices anyhow. I just don't like the design of the Fuze+ because they got rid of the scroll wheel and have a touchpad thing instead.
  • My first mp3 player was in 2000. I think it was 32 meg. It was a Rioport.
  • Mine was a 64 meg one (Not sure of the brand) but it had an sd card slot so I had a total of 128 megs.
