Much of my opinions today are shaped by the fact that I went to a public school system which simultaneously assigned us to read stories such as that while also acting directly contrary to the message of said stories. Democracy, freedom, and justice were so heavily emphasized in history and social studies classes, yet the school itself acted directly contrary to all of those principles.

Oh, definitely. It's such a gross irony, that dichotomy. "We are all special and unique." "We should try and 'fit in'." I was literally told by my vice principal in middle school that "If you don't want to be picked on, maybe you should work on not being so different from the other kids."
