I'll say it again. Back your shit up in the god damned cloud. External drives are more convenient for faster recovery and more frequent backup, especially of larger files. However, they will fail just like your other drives. Amazon's servers will not fail. This forum is backed up on Amazon every night. Cost: .67 cents a month. It's worth it.
Is it safe to assume that free digitally acquired media is a "no-no" for cloud storage? I'm not talking TV shows or anything. Just mp3s. I've been scanning through the customer agreement, and I haven't found much, but could have missed it.

If you are really worried, encrypt that shit. Most of the cloud backup solutions have some way to encrypt your backups.
Personally I don't backup pirated stuffs because I can just re-pirate it. If I really wanted to back it up, I would get one of those off-shore bittorrent hosts. They sell these servers to people who want to get high ratios on some pirate services. However, they will do a very good job of backing up your pirated goods, while also seeding them on the torrents.
You shouldn't really need a backup for pirated stuffs in the first place, since as Scott said it can just be re-pirated. However, there are a couple of exceptions to that: 1) If it's difficult to find on the internet (e.g. torrents have stopped seeding) 2) If it's a mixture of data from such a large number of sources that re-obtaining it becomes prohibitively difficult.
Number 2) is often the case for music, and I'm guessing that's your situation. In that case, I guess an encrypted backup could be in order.
Interesting. I really need to research this more. What do you have on a cloud?
I just use Amazon S3 to backup unreplaceable things like the web site databases, my accounting data, etc. My photos are on Flickr. The GeekNights mp3s are on Libsyn, but I'm thinking about getting them backed up elsewhere as well. Google Docs has important docs.
Also, remember. Let's say you have something in the cloud ONLY. Then you need to back that shit up local, in case the cloud service disappears. http://www.dataliberation.org/

Those pretty much. My HD crapped out on me a while back, but it was the HD that had only my OS on it really. I did lose a all of my original cross-stitch patterns and a few pictures that I didn't have backed up.
Eventually I'll just shell out the money to get them recovered, hopefully.

Anyway, more to the point of the episode, yeah getting burgled sucks. We have a dog*. Best security system in the world, more responsive to threats, and probably cheaper than any service. Plus you have the love and companionship of another mammal to keep you company.

If you knew Scott, you would not suggest this. He would look at a dog and go "What is its function? It does not do tech things, play board games, or talk. All it does is poop and make noise." Scott is not really an animal or baby fan.
Unless you get a big mean fucking dog burglars might just kill it. It might wake you up if you are burgled while sleeping, but burglary when you are not home is much more likely. Also, if you are away from home for an extended time, you probably put the dog in a kennel, or take it with you, and then what? Dogs help a little against burglary, but not that much.

Admittedly yes. My family lives in the suburbs and with our weird schedules someone is usually home at any given time. Also we have a fair arsenal of firearms so at least in my house if you try and burgle burgle you'll be greeted by the German Shepherd, soon followed by a shotgun in your face.
Again, before taking my advice to get a gun consult your local and state laws as to firearms possession and if you live in an apartment make sure they're kosher. But as Scott mentioned, that won't help much unless someone breaks in while you're there, otherwise just follow his advice given in the podcast.

This, anecdotally a former landlord was burgled (such a funny word) and his mean dog were beat down with a shovel. The dog were never the same afterwards, you'd reach out to pet him and he'd run away.
Related to all of this, it's a crying shame booby traps are illegal.
You say that until you are caught in your own trap. The Darwin awards would have an overload if traps were legal. Also, the correct term is man-trap.
You think legality stops crazy people? an old man trapped his whole goddamn house, wrote all of the traps down, and then promptly forgot about them and killed himself. The police still don't know where the last few traps are, and he got a Darwin Award.

Also, they should follow through with that literally and make bras illegal.
