  • With any luck, the 3DS will be able to function as a controller (at least maybe for some games)
No fucking way. They could have trivially done this with the DS, and yet they didn't. Nintendo so grievously underachieved compared to the potential of the DS/Wii that I have no faith in them to do anything interesting. What was once "buy sight-unseen day one" is now "buy if it proves itself."

I was just going to say this. The DS is SO cheap, especially compared to 3DS, and the Wii is cheap too. If they were going to get into DS/Wii touchy feely stuff, they would have done it by now. No way in hell they will try to sell a $250 controller (3DS) for a $250 or even $299 system (Wii2).

Also, who posted above and said that the DS was a gimmick? Blasphemy! Maybe if you can only buy 1 or 2 games, including Brain Training.. I can see that. But tons of DS games are so cheap now, grab a copy of NSMB, TWEWY, Ouendan, Clash of Heroes, Bowsers Inside Story ad you will start to get an inkling of what the DS can do. That, and it has a metric FUCKTON of games. If you are so inclined, get an R4 and go to town. You will find something suitable.

I declare the DS the winner of this generation! Wii, 360 and PS3 a distant 2nd equal.

I agree kidna. I say that DS is king, 360 is next, then Wii, then PS3. The DS may be dying/dead now, but even recently it has had some good games. Ghost Trick and Pokemon basically just came out. I think it's going to take a long time for the 3DS to come close to the DS library. I'll probably get a 3DS lite.

Ghost Trick, Pokemon, Okamiden, Radiant Historia, even Picross 3D. It's having one hell of a goodbye that's for sure.
I would rank in the same order, perhaps Wii and 360 equal, I think they both have their strengths. (First party Nintendo titles vs Xbox live - BOTH awesome).
PS3 has never really hit its stride. Yes, I own one... I just use it to watch MLP in 1080P at the moment :P

Also, it cant be stated enough... the R4 really makes the DS shine. Being able to play every game was fantastic. Still is.
  • Couldn't care less. Nintendo is pretty much dead to me unless they actually innovate on the game front. I can only play the same four games so many times...

I'll agree with that to a point, I declared the DS the winner of the console war early in 2007 and people looked at me like I was crazy. Now I'll say that each console does their own thing really well. Xbox has live, PS3 has some great single player exclusives, and Wii has fantastic platformers. Platformers being my favorite genre I tend to heavily favor PS3 and Wii. However, the Xbox has huge benefits for people who don't have a gaming PC that can play shooters and care a lot about playing with their friends. There is a place for all three to exist, and the market has shown that three consoles that are different enough can survive and be healthy. The only one that had a shot at dying off by the next generation was the Xbox and if it was released by any other company it would have folded already but Microsoft has enough money to keep it alive no matter how much it costs them.

I hear this a lot and I don't get it. Yes, they haven't developed a new property in the last few years but their games are always well designed and deliver gameplay that is enjoyable, simple but skill based, and innovative. There are moments in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where the game design was so good that while the platforming mechanic worked the same the layout of the level shifted and make it look like Mario was doing something impossible. It was more impressive and enjoyable than a God of War quick time event or Call of Duty forced controversy.

Have you guys played Donkey Kong Country Returns or Kirby's Epic Yarn? I have confidence in Nintendo's ability to create fun and fulfilling games, even though I can agree that the Wii's overall release schedule is not all that promising. Still, considering the quality of the 3DS' built-in interface, I'm cautiously optimistic that Nintendo is learning how to implement better software for their newer consoles.

  • I've only played DKCR once and it was about a month ago. I found myself missing the enemies cry out "UGGHH" when I jumped on them like the Kritters did in the original DKC.

I played Yarn. Still have to beat it. But herein lies Nintendo's fundamental problem. On any other platform, Kirby's Epic Yarn is $20 at most. $15 probably. Then $10 a few months after launch and $5 a year after launch. Meanwhile the game is $30 on Amazon, but still $50 everywhere else. Sorry, Portal 2 is $40 brand new, Kirby's Epic Yarn is not a $30 game. I think this is the primary reason Nintendo wants to keep the true indies off their platform. Meat Boy selling for $5 makes a $5 virtual console game look like the huge rip off that it is. Not to mention $30+ DS games.

How so? Throughout playing the entire game, not once did I really feel like it was comparable to a downloadable game, and I have not heard that evaluation from anyone else before. I've heard most people singing its praises, and that the game is quite fitting for the Wii console. I'm not trying to be a Nintendo apologetic, but I felt that Epic Yarn is a quality game that deserves its Amazon price point ($30).

It was fun, and felt meatier than Super Meat Boy (which I beat and thoroughly enjoyed, too).

It's a good game, but hell no is it not worth $30. Shadow Complex is $15. The Potato Sack is $43.65. Remember, the Kirby price is STILL $50, it's only $30 on Amazon.

So wait, your going to make the argument that because there are year old games that are cheaper and good then a company can't release a game at the target new release price AND they have to drop that price like indie developers and other companies do after they get there initial spike??

There are only so many hours in a day which means there are only so many games you can play. When something like Minecraft, which is probably better than any Wii game ever, costs 15 Euros and can occupy your entire life, how can you possibly justify $50 for Mario Sports Mix or Donkey Kong Country Returns? How can you even justify $25 for something like 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors? How can you justify $5 for a single virtual console game when SEGA Classic packs on Steam are $7.50? The pricing makes absolutely no sense.

How can you justify Super Street Fighter IV for 3DS costing $40 when it costs $30 for the XBox version? Hell, Amazon is selling the PS3 version for $18.88!
  • At this moment you realize you are having a discussion with Scott, and should probably go do something more productive with your time.
  • Scott, how much do you know about supply and demand? Obviously not very much.

Using Minecraft as an example for this is pointless. It's an indie game and you are comparing it to big name titles. If Minecraft were to be sold for $50 or $60, almost no one would buy it. People will buy a Nintendo game for $50 because it's a Nintendo game. The name actually means something to them, and as such, Nintendo can charge full price for that game for longer because -gasp- PEOPLE WILL STILL BUY IT. There is consistently a demand for Nintendo games, so why would they cut the price until they absolutely have to and stop raking in the money hand over fist? Answer: they wouldn't.
How can you justify $5 for a single virtual console game when SEGA Classic packs on Steam are $7.50? The pricing makes absolutely no sense.
It makes perfect sense, most of the people who own a Wii don't have Steam. They have no need to as all of the games they want to play are on the Wii. The reason that Steam can bundle a bunch of games is because the demand for said games are very low by themselves. While it can hardly be said that the Virtual Console is doing exceptionally well, I can almost whole-heartedly assure you that those games will sell better than the classic games on Steam.
How can you justify Super Street Fighter IV for 3DS costing $40 when it costs $30 for the XBox version? Hell, Amazon is selling the PS3 version for $18.88!
    BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL BUY IT.
  • As Scott said, there are only so many hours in the day.

But then he goes on a rant about freaken prices!

These are two totally separate arguments. If you are talking about VALUE, then yeah, perhaps some of the full priced Nintendo games offer less value than cheaper steam bundles, or some indie games. Sure.

Where I *thought* you were going with this is where because you only have finite play hours you should seek to maximize your enjoyment, IRRESPECTIVE of price. I.e. If Kirby's yarn is $50 but you really like cute platformers then you are much better spending that $50 on Kirby and enjoying the hell out of it, rather than dropping $50 into 2 or 3 average games, just to fill in time.

I had to pay US $80 for Mario Galaxy 2 (NZ pricing, sheesh) but you know what, I loved the first Galaxy and playing through the 2nd one was just pure joy. Got all 120 normal stars. There was NO CHANCE I was ever going to spend that $80 on "other" games, even if that would meant better value or more hours.
  • My god there is a lot of dumb arguing going on in this thread.

Time and value are related. Indie games can be compared to big publisher games. They are all games, and we all have finite time and money to spend. Companies are free to make whatever games and charge whatever they want, and it's up to you all to decide whether it is worth the time and cost to play them. I am sure your conclusions will differ widely from each others.

Now this is interesting, it looks like not only is the screen in the controller confirmed, but it's massive. My interest has officially been piqued, though I can't for the life of me imagine how Nintendo is going to sell this thing - they refuse to sell at anything but a profit, but honestly this controller sounds about as expensive as a Wii in and of itself. What's their game, I wonder?

Edit: Also, some possible leaked images. I am not claiming veracity here, just posting for the sake of discussion.

  • The 6.2-inch screen will receive data wirelessly from the Nintendo console and presents an array of options, from putting the player's inventory or map on the controller screen
I am gushing at the idea of it.

Four Swords may not have taken off when you had to own a total of five gaming systems and four link cables... but if the required device is included with every system? Maybe the slowing Wii sales opened Nintendo's eyes (or maybe there's just a new rotation of younger hardware developers), but... well, I'm feeling that old flame stirring again.
  • Dreamcast
Yeah, that was one of the first things I thought of when I heard this - who knows, maybe this time it'll take off?
  • Yeah it looks like a combination of the whole GBA-GC connectivity and the DC controller. I think its an exciting idea even if its just for menus and whatnot. I just think it will be hilarious if the Wii2 goes back to more traditional gameplay and has all of the hardcore games while the Sony and M$ are back where the Wii was. I'm not saying its going to happen but it would be funny. Either way I'm probably just going to buy it. As long as they have some games like Mario and Zelda I'll probably buy whatever crazy looking shit they churn out. Its all about the games, man.
  • I predict that the Wii 2 will have 3d built in. You will be able to play 3DS 3d games, with the TV as the main screen, and the screen on the controller taking the place of the lower 3DS touch screen.

Not only will it have 3d using 3d flat screen TVs, but the camera in the controller will have a camera built in that points towards the TV. It will track the TV like the current WiiMote does the infrared thingy, and do "Hi, I'm Jonny Lee"/headtracking style 3d which changes the viewpoint of the in-game camera on where the controller is held. This would be great for looking around corners.

Colour me totally meh. I played a grand total of one game on the Wii, and that game was Brawl. I've gotten far more mileage out of the 360. I have the feeling that Nintendo has realized the cash is in hyped sales of cheaply made consoles, not games. I'm not interested in another hunk of plastic under my TV unless it's got the goods to go with it.

Now, when faith in Nintendo is wavering and weak, is when SEGA should come back and release the DREAMCAST 2.

  • Oh thing I think might be interesting is to have the option of using the controller screen as the main one like in Pacman VS. Maybe CO:BLOPS2: Electric Boogaloo could have multiplayer like that. Or when you do things like use the RCXD it could be on the small screen while still showing your character on the main screen. Plus it would just be great to have as a map or as a screen if you use a camera spike. Its not really necessary or anything but it would be a nifty little feature that adds to the game like how the wiimote acts like a cellphone in No More Heroes. One thing I think would be awesome but I doubt would happen would be to have some sort of multitasking option. Like say I have netflix open on my Wii2 and I want to play a game. All I have to do is open it up on my controller and use it like a normal handheld.
