Remembering just how old you truly are

  • Why are you talking about floppy disks? If you never sat through games loading on cassette tape...

Or even better, copied the source code out of magazine, and then type "run".

I've seen floppy disks and cassette tapes. I think I found a big ol' box of them in my parent's old house.
  • I used floppy disks in my dad's digital camera. You could take like four photos per disk.

I wish I could remember the kids' detective books where you had to copy and run BASIC programs to solve the mystery.

My first "digital camera" was a Sony MaviCap. It captured still images from analogue video signals and saved them as JPG files to floppy disc.

Buying that was one of the things that made my website so popular back in the day, and along with my video camera, one of the reasons I'm a professional juggler today!

    I remember something similar!

If I make it down to my parents' house in the near future I'll have a look over the book shelves in my old room - I know I had one of those books and I also know my mom never threw anything of mine away.
  • To revive a quote of my own, said in general to current 18 year olds, "I have save games older than you!".
I have cartridges so old that the they no longer hold saved games. I had to crack open my Zelda and replace the battery.
I bought a copy of Sopwith.
You are officially older than me.
  • Kids that are 5 or younger now are going to look at a DVD and a laugh.
  • I never even heard of Sopwith, but now I'm fascinated.

I didn't know they had digital cameras back then
  • My first computer storage looked something like this (not this exact model though, I don't think):

Is that a walkman? You can store computers on those? Where do they put all the ones and zeroes? =P

The other day my spouse said he couldn't find his Walkman. I knew he meant his iPod, but our son was quite amused.

This is a case of things in reverse, but at first when older people came into my store and demanded a transistor radio, I did not know what that was. I'd only heard reference in the song "Brown Eyed Girl." Now I know they mean a small radio meant to fit in a pocket with a speaker on it.
Also, there are small children who watch John Cena now who will have never seen Eddie Guerrero wrestle and there will soon be wrestling fans who will not know who Chris Benoit is.
EDIT: Oh heck, there are kids who've been watching wrestling for a while now who have never seen WCW or ECW outside of a Vince McMahon owned context!

That's double scary. It's not like saying kids don't know Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. That would be saying the young kids don't know the old guys. It's to be expected. You're saying the punk kids don't even know guys who are so new that I don't know who they are.

I shall never forget the moment when I heard someone say, "John Lennon? Isn't he Julian's dad?" And of course even that points to my being old, since there was really only one brief moment in time when people knew who Julian is.

Everyone needs to know who "Macho Man" Randy Savage is.

I'm really surprised that you haven't heard of Chris Benoit. He was one of the best wrestlers of all time in terms of an ring ring move for move performer, but about 4 years ago in June 2007 he snapped and killed his wife and child, then himself. When they examined his brain, they discovered that he had suffered many concussions because of his style, and he basically had the brains of an old man with Alzheimer's. His murder-suicide is THE primary reason that professional sports are so concerned about concussions now. Since that time, WWE has tried to write him out of history. His name is not mentioned among Royal Rumble winners and his involvement in old shows they sell on DVD is no longer listed. His legacy in professional wrestling is gigantic, but you wouldn't know it unless you talked to a hardcore wrestling fan.

If it happened in wrestling after the early '90s I probably haven't heard of it.
  • It was all over the news, Scott. I never listen to anything about wrestling, and even I knew that name.
  • His legacy in professional wrestling is gigantic, but you wouldn't know it unless you talked to a hardcore wrestling fan.
That's actually very interesting. I was just reading the wikipedia page about him because of this.

I'm not a pro wrestling fan by any stretch, but the behind-the-scenes world of professional wrestling is fascinating. Check out the wiki article on "kayfabe", for starters. The glossary of pro wrestling terms is pretty amazing, too.

That article does not do justice to his influence and what happened after his death. I'll write more later when I have more time.

That would be appreciated. I'm actually doing my research for our upcoming wrastlin' show. It's a fantastic example of the fact that anything is nerdy if you're into it.

While I'm sure Hitman could say it more eloquently that I can, Benoit, along with Eddie Gurerrero, basically paved the way for the smaller guys to become big in wrestling. Back in the early days it was all about the big guys. 6'8" 300 pound burly men were the only ones really given a chance to make it big in the business. If you were small, you basically had to kill yourself in the ring doing all these high flying over the top rope moves to even get over with the fans. Gurerrero and Benoit basically said "fuck that noise" and preceded to wrestle very technical styles and made them interesting to watch. They had a huge cult following before making it big in WCW where they were brought to a mainstream audience and basically paved the way for the smaller athletes to have a chance in the business.

  • The sad part is great wrestlers like Christopher Daniels still will not get a shot in major venues like WWE due to the nature of the size issue. One thing I have learned from many a people I talked about wrestling, it is ok to look at smaller shows, like ring of honor, because if 2 people can tell a story in a ring without a microphone then you have something magical to watch.
  • and preceded to wrestle very technical styles and made them interesting to watch.
What makes a "technical style" in the context of "sports entertainment", not-actually-an-athletic-competition wrestling?
  • Basically his style used an abundance of submission holds, suplexes, and was grounded in mat wrestling. But Benoit used such a variety of holds and such that it never really got boring, and most of his matching do not look too similar from one another. This is more opposed to say, the standard WWE style which uses a more abundance of punches and kicks as opposed to actual "moves".
