If you only like snarky female leads who outwit the dullard men then go watch Everybody Loves Raymond. If you cant understand a female character as anything other than a walking boob job then The Jersey Shore might be for you.
Well, personally, I like the moe type of character - RE: Fluttershy - but not as the dominant facet of a show. I prefer anime with a mix of character archetypes. And yes, "tits" qualifies as a character archetype.

That's another thing, how can a forum with such a large MLP following dismiss moe out of hand! This cognitive dissonance is getting me all riled up!
I predict this conversation to remind of that argument the forum had with that one guy who defended his love for young boy hentai. I forget his name nor can I think of the easiest way to find that thread.

Fluttershy should be the glowing beacon of what a cutesy character should be. (I'm not saying Moe, because Moe = Useless/Loved Through Pity) Badass when necessary, but generally very caring and emotional.
I think the toughest things with either these super fanservice shows on both sides of the show, is that usually the WANT to try and walk that fine line. Have all the cutesy mischief or over the top actions, but try to seriously rein it in with emotion. Even the really bad harems or shows like K-On! do that, where they try to sell the shallow interactions as real friendships, when they just aren't written well enough for (us) to care. Some people apparently cried in the second season of K-On because there was this big tearful goodbye, but at that point I had written the series off because it hoodwinked me on this premise. It feels like lots of shows don't want to admit that they are mindless fluff or fanservice. They want to try and legitimize themselves as a comedy, romance, or coming-of-age story when they just plan aren't.

Shy, insecure and batshit insane?

This is true. I too teared up. I still cannot identify whether it was because how painfully forced that flashflood was, or how hilariously forced that flashflood was. Either way, there were tears, and pain from laughter, but that's not saying much. You can almost get me to choke to death laughing by telling a good poop joke.

Haha so long ago cant believe I posted so much on there. 4 years, wow.
And why hate on Moe. Its just a character archetype thats mutually exclusive with quality. You can have good Moe chars (Fluttershy, Rika Furude) and bad ones (most others). A character can be better simply because they are Moe, if done right. They can also be added on for no reason other than fanservice for certain people. I also dont know why Moe is singled out from all the other character cliches, like loli, tsundere, yandere, etc.

There might be part of the problem here. Mow should be just a character type, but it's used to define whole shows. Something that can work as a one character can't probably alone hold up a whole show.
I hate all y'all for this thread. Here's the secret. The Japanese are not really all that different from you. People are people, not matter where you go. I really hate the "Japanese are inscrutable" viewpoint. It is dumb and counterproductive. If we judged countries solely on their media, or worse yet, on their porn, we would have a very screwed view of almost every nation in the world. The "Japan (the country) is weird" bit is grating on my nerves, because it is mostly a myth perpetrated by western people out of ignorance. Sure, Japan has some freaky weird stuff, but all in all, my classmates, my family, my friends all have a ton in common with my friends over in the states. If I judged America by its weirder elements, I would have a pretty low opinion of it as well.
I've met many women that are obsessed with and in love with Japanese culture. Yet the Japanese, as a culture, are pretty much complete assholes to women. If these women actually went over there, I think they'd be in for a surprise (and I don't necessarily mean by bukake sharking or tentacle rape). Yeah. The Japanese culture is certainly beyond my grasp.
I can tell you are viewing Japan from an outside perspective. I lived there for a long time and most of the people I met were pretty normal. I'd say that as far as the treatment of women, as a society it has a long way to come in terms of feminist principles, but then again so does most of the world. The worst I encountered was pretty much the equivalent of the well-meaning but annoying sexism that old men and people of older generations tend to employ, like assuming that you are going to get married, and not letting you carry stuff because you are a girl. Bad? Sure. But things are getting better.
Also, Bruce, please try harder to fix your grammatical errors. You are our friend, but you keep breaking the forum rules on purpose, and that's not fair to people who try hard and proofread. You wear it like an obstinate badge of honor, judging from the thread title, and it just makes you look petulant and surly.

THANK YOU, DEAR GOD. That explains the weird comment in the title.

Eh, I'm not concerned. There happens to be that Japan, to me, Is quite weird. So is England, China, America. I have no illusions that a lot of things about my country are weird to Japanese people, too, along with the English, Chinese and Americans. It's just the way of the world - things that are outside of the culture you know tend to be weird to you in some way. As long as you're not an asshole about it, or don't think that you're superior because you think they're weird, and you're normal, it's all cool.

Yeah, like universal healthcare, right to assisted suicide, legal whores and drugs and liquorice. Fuck y'all monsters upon the fabric of this planet with your lack of liquorice! Proper liquorice at that, not your shitty gummi crap.

Wat? Fock dat. I'm going to claim that I'm superior for the sake of argument and self-defence. Otherwise you'd be superior to too many folk out there.
Eh, I'm not concerned. There happens to be that Japan, to me, Is quite weird.
Yeah, unfamiliar makes stuff weird. I am just making the argument that yes, Japan does seem weird sometimes, but I don't think it is exponentially weirder than other countries like people always suggest.

Not objectively, but subjectively, it is usually exponentially weirder because to, say, an American, Australia is weird, but it's a western culture, so there is a limit to how weird it will get because there is still some base familiarity. Japan is an east Asian culture, which is quite different to a western culture, so the limit of wierdness is subjectively much higher, because the level of unfamiliarity is much higher. Naturally, the more familiar you become with Japanese culture you become, the less weird it becomes. People like you and fred wouldn't even break stride for something that would make me do a double take.

I guess it's kind of like Engrish. I still chuckle at it, but now when someone has a shirt that says something like "I am dulding an adition onto my house. PANK ROCK !!" and a picture of a guy throwing up the horns, I hardly give a second glance. It doesn't really stop being weird, but you do get more used to it. Also, a lot of those weird sex examples that people use would weird almost all Japanese people out as well.

Not gonna lie, that ass picture made me giggle.
