I just carry that shit in. They hardly ever stop me and when they do I usually say, "Look, I'm taking this stuff in" in my "I'm a tough guy" voice, which usual sounds something like Spike Spiegel. That's usually enough to get rid of their "none shall pass" attitude.

Not to mention its not like they can really stop you anyway.

This strikes me as similar to getting mad at the EB guy for asking you to pre-order games.
The guy at the door doesn't care. I've been that guy, so I know. Theaters make 99% of their money from food so it's the door guy's boss who cares and your one man wolf pack maverick food haver routine isn't making his life any easier. He's the door guy at the fucking theater, his life sucks enough already. Put that shit in your pockets.
My usually line was "I can't see you bring that in" and 90% of the time people got the hint and stuck it in their bags or something.
Now I'm not saying don't sneak in food, I'm just saying SNEAK in food for the sake of all those poor minimum wagers out there.
Seems like the whole Megaupload thing has done a bit of damage. A lot of similar sites have changed their model so now only the person who uploaded the file can download it.
We need to go back to pure P2P sharing like the olden days. No centralized servers. No web site that can be taken down or blocked. Just your computer connecting to your friend's computers. I'm thinking something like using WASTE or Gnutella to share .torrent files, then using torrent for the actual file sharing.

Indeed. Maybe next Monday show, we talk about how to architect something like this? Use cases, requirements, all that jazz?
I don't have time to build it, and I doubt Scott does either, but we at least know what and how. ;^) It's also a good exercise in how one actually plans a featureset for a software project.

I would listen to this, it could be interesting. We could share it with some of the people trying to organize a darknet, as it would be a part of that.
I just prefer to have a beverage if my throat were to become parched. Overall, I tend to eat before we go to the theater to save money and not be hungry.
It would be trivial to launch such a service, and many have tried. The only reason they have failed is they lacked critical mass. I could set that business up overnight, technologically, but it takes a lot of work to actually get a ton of artists on board. Look at CDBaby, Jamendo, eMusic, etc.

That is true. However, Megaupload probably more than a lot of other people, could've properly pulled it off because they already had the insanely large datacenters and bandwidth required.
Anyway, I'm not saying this is the reason why they were shutdown -- just that this is the latest rumor floating around concerning the shutdown.

I too like to have something to drink, so the theaters usually aren't too much more exorbitant for me than anywhere else (and I can't reasonably sneak in a 2-liter without having to explain why I'm happy to see them) but I usually end up going to the bathroom during an important scene.
The shutdown of megaupload is actually very bad. My other similar sites are receiving a lot of collateral damage.
MegaUpload - Closed. Rapidshare - status unknown FileServe - Closing does not sell premium. File sharing already disabled. FileJungle - Deleting files. Locked in the U.S.. UploadStation - Locked in the U.S.. FileSonic - the news is arbitrary (under FBI investigation). No longer allows sharing files. VideoBB - Closed! would disappear soon. Uploaded - Banned U.S. and the FBI went after the owners who are gone. FilePost - Deleting all material (will leave executables, pdfs, txts) Videoz - closed and locked in the countries affiliated with the USA. 4shared - Deleting files with copyright and waits in line at the FBI. MediaFire - Called to testify in the next 90 days
Many other sites that arent closing are simply banning US IPs. The government is doing all this without SOPA and PIPA. Imagine if they had that.
What is UPS' responsibility to ensure contents of packages are legal? Can the USPS be shut down if it is used to ship poached ivory or butterfly knives? Can Blizzard be shut down by the FBI for allowing Chinese gold farming? Can the cable company be shut down if you steal cable or look at kiddie porn?
I'm not sure why the law allows legitimate services to be terminated because of end user actions.

There are many things that UPS is not allowed to ship, and they have safeguards in place to make sure they do not do so. Try shipping some fireworks, and lie to the the UPS employee and say there is nothing dangerous in the package. See what happens.

There is a difference between "this stuff is illegal" and "this stuff is a hazardous".

Smuggle some cuban cigars into the US. Then try to ship them domestically via UPS. See what happens.

Ooookay... are any of those sites used for substantial non-infringing purposes?
I have a hard time believing that a significant percentage of the files shared through those websites are legit. Maybe the operators have simply decided it's not worth the risk of facilitating US IP infringement anymore. There's a reason Napster and similar platforms died.
If you're going to break IP law, just acknowledge that it's illegal, and don't get upset when companies decide to stop helping you because it's too risky!
