I hadn't read the whole thread and didn't know this was already posted. Sweet! I've been hankering to get crew for this for about 2 years now but only one person will sigh on with me!
Counter to missiles is defense droids. Two defense II droids will shoot down a lot of missiles.
Oh yeah, forgot that. That nicely balances the beam salvo, then. Though, the penatrative qualities of the Burst Laser Mk2 are still really powerful, but you pay for that in power draw.
I love Artemis, but it's not nearly as frenetic and exciting as FTL. A plugin that let Artemis interface with FTL for generating scenarios and encounters would be neat.
Ok, this game is rad. I was cruising along, doin' just fine until I got into a bad firefight over a star that was spitting solar flares on my ass.
I ended up winning the fight but by the time that happened over half of my ship was ablaze. I ended up losing 2 of my 5 crew members (including Ender Wiggins, weapon specialist) and rage quit. This games a gem!
I was disappointed to see that FTL is unplayable on my netbook because of the resolution. Still haven't managed to beat the boss on easy yet, and with Borderlands 2 now, my FTL time is going to be cut down a lot.
It's a roguelike. Normal means "ball-crushingly hard". Easy means "Maybe you can beat it". Hard means "Like a less pleasent version of Testicular Torsion".
Tried another run with the federation cruiser on easy without upgrading weapons. Just letting the cruiser's main gun deal damage and going all out defense. Failed me on the boss majorly. Might be perfectly workable with better luck (some way to quickly eliminate ion and rocket guns).

Boarding works wonders on the first stage of the boss, at least.
Just beat the game on easy with the Kestrel. Burst-type lasers are really good.
Also, I had been underestimated the usefulness of well-upgraded engines. Those missiles aren't going to dodge themselves! Defense drones are arguably slightly more useful power-for-power, but I didn't happen to find any on my run.
Godamnit. Never could get the cloak on an otherwise crazy run with the crystal ship. If I would have approached the final fight in the opposite direction, I might have even gotten to visit one more shop, but since I went left instead of right it was gone by the time I arrived.
I played this game for the first time at 1 am this morning. I figured I'd try it out a little before going to sleep. Then it was 3:30 am and I had lost the game as well as 2.5 hours of sleep.
The only ships I'm missing are the slug and the crystal. I want that crystalline goodness so bad.
The crystalline one annoys me more than a little because I have had the guy on my ship 3 times so far but not found the system he need to go to. I also don't think I've had the opportunity to get most of them so far. I've been taking a break from this because I'm having trouble unlocking more ships (I have both federation, engi, and zoltan) and normal difficulty seems impossible.
FYI: I'm pretty sure the Rock Homeworld is always the second to last sector.
Nah, it pops up as randomly as any other sector. It is always a red sector, though.
Confirmed. I'm in the same spot. Gotten the crystal guy but failed to find the Rock Homeworld.
I would expect that if they let you get the crystal guy the rock homeworld should at least be on the map. Whether it's actually accessible after unfreezing him is another matter. I've not had the opportunity to go to the rock homeworlds while having him. Might be that I took the wrong path, but it's hard to say.
Wiki says: Same as Rock Controlled Sector, only with the special Rock and Crystallic questlines. (appears in the 7th sector, rarely on the 6th and very rarely on the 5th. Always red.)
Just got the Zoltan ship. I find my problem is running out of missiles to shoot at things. I made it to the end boss in the Engi ship with four tiers of shields, Ion Bomb, a laser weapon, Pegasus missiles, and a Defense Drone MK II, which was doing okay until I got shit on by a missile salvo and ran out of my own.
Fuck missiles, mass burst laser salvos are the way to go. Bombs can be nice, too - hull damage doesn't matter as much as damaging the shield system enough for your other guns to get through.
Anything that starts fires is gold in conjunction with a teleporter or boarding drone. One of my best Donut Runs was with a pair of fire beams and a boarding drone. Punch the drone into the oxygen room and light fire to the other rooms. Kill the crew pretty much instantly.

5500 points though on normal. My new high score.
