  • There is porn of every fictional character named in this thread up to this point. Never forget that fact.

    /Just sayin'.
Lame, that's Rule 34 noob shit.
I think so far, not counting the truly gruesome examples out there, the gender swapping Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends stuff has scarred me the most. Poor Bleu.
  • Return of the Jedi is great in the following ways:

    * Everything that happens between Luke, Vader and the Emperor.
    * The space battle at the end (which is an extension of the above point).
    * At the start, Luke is awesome. Everything he does and says is great.
    * Speeder chase.

    Not so great:
    * Ewoks, while fun and cute, have no business defeating any number of Imperial Scouts. These are the same kind of guys who fucked up Hoth base no problem at all. Having small bears defeat them cheapens the entire idea of the Empire as a strong foe. The only reason we accept it is that the Emperor and Vader are distracting us. That said, as a child I loved the Ewoks.
    * All of the plotting of the first half of the movie. What the fuck is everyone going in to Jabba's palace for? It's fun that the droids were sent in by Luke, but really, Luke could have saved Han himself. In the end he saves everyone else too. I really like the cool pirate-swashbuckling rescue, but the actual plotting makes no sense.
    * Harrison Ford obviously isn't interested in the movie. Other actors are also dialing it in.
    * "The Other" turning out to be Leia is not only stupid but actually pointless. "The Other" was meant to be a reference to a new hero protagonist to be used in Episodes 7-9, back when Lucas still had plans to make them. Leia was the obvious choice to get out of that hole, but it is so contrived that it has to be explained FOUR times (once by Obiwan to Luke, again by Luke to Leia, again by Luke to Vader (via mind reading), and again by Leia to Han Solo. Come on! If it could be used by Vader as a weapon against Luke, why tell him then? It's made to work, but is very clumsy, and I think distracts from the real story.
    * Chewbacca letting his empty stomach spring the trap. That moment is as bad as anything Jar Jar gets up to.

So, I stand by "huge portions of Jedi are no better than The Phantom Menace". I'm not saying any single thing in The Phantom Menace comes anywhere close to the best of Jedi, but the worst of Jedi is at the same level as The Phantom Menace.
  • Well, the reason the Ewoks win is that Jesus.. I mean Luke is fighting his dad Sat... Darth Vader up in the sky and as he overtakes and beats him, the Ewoks also begin to turn the tide and win. It's like, the Force and shit.
  • Luke and Han escaping the Death Star in Star Wars is just as unrealistic as the Ewoks beating the Imperials in RotJ. There are incredibly few movies where things of this nature make sense. Video games are even worse. Why don't all the koopas attack mario simultaneously? Why doesn't Bowser dig a pit that Mario can not possibly jump over? Why doesn't every bad guy ever just shoot James Bond instead of putting him in a trap with sharks/lasers and leaving the room? If you count that sort of thing as a ruiner, then there is almost nothing left.
  • But Thrawn is SO good. Rym and Scott (of "Most of Everything is Awful" fame) like Thrawn, IIRC.
Thrawn is like Anasûrimbor Kellhus and Admiral Nelson smashed together at high speed. But not in the Jam-like paste kind of way.

I like the idea of Thrawn, but not any of the actual fiction around him outside of TIE Fighter.

I know that kind of thing happens in movies all the time. The thing about Luke and Han rescuing Leia from the Death Star is that is focused on the main characters, and you care about them. That IS the story at that point. And with the Millennium Falcon flying through the asteroid field. It's unbelievable, but it IS the story.

I think I was clear that in Jedi, the real story is on the Death Star. The secondary story is the space battle to blow up the Death Star. We also have Han and Leia blowing up the generators. That is all the story we need.

The Ewoks are a distraction from that story. This is my point. We only accept it because we are being distracted by stuff that actually matters. The movie would have been better if R2-D2 got them into the bunker instead of shorting himself out, and then we wouldn't need the massive roundabout way that Chewbacca captures the AT-AT...

So, in this case, the Ewoks are as bad as the dumb shit that happens in The Phantom Menace. It's just a distraction.

  • Yes, yes we are.
  • Not hate. Just taken off rose tinted childhood glasses and seen it clearly.

Scott, in the DVD special edition of Jedi, Han Solo's feet are tangled up in cables so he doesn't fall off the barge. It's actually done pretty well.

Except... sigh... Sarlacc has a beak. Can we have ankle cables and no eak, please? What made Sarlacc so cool was the mystery. What's down there? How long does it take to die if you fall in? Why is it so vaginal? A beak takes away all that.

  • One good thing about this Disney purchase is that we might actually see a HD/BlueRay release of the original theatrical versions of the original trilogy. It would make all the fans go out and buy the trilogy all over again again again. How about a six disc box set of the Theatrical edition, the digitally remastered version, the cinema Special Edition, the DVD special edition, the BlueRay special edition and the 3D Special Edition? I bet they could sell that for 120 dollars per episode and make a killing.

This. This is why I'm excited about the Disney buyout. Lucas knows fans want remasters of the original cuts with no added bullshit, but doesn't want to give his ex-wife royalties because he's buttmad. That's not an exaggeration, I believe a whole book has been written about the crazy internal politicking behind Star Wars releases and Special Editions.

Disney, on the other hand, knows what fans want and knows how to make money. They also know that, contrary to the core message of many of their animated films, success has nothing at all to do with broken hearts or love.

I heard that Fox still has the original trilogy which would prevent Disney from doing that.
  • Luke, did you ever seed that torrent of your own re-cut of Star Wars? I kinda want to throw a little celebration of "George Lucas No-longer owns Star Wars" thing and that would actually be an interesting experiment.
  • I haven't released it officially yet, as I was hoping to do it through FanEdit.org. It's waiting to be approved there, but the administrators are busy with other stuff. I have the final version ready to watch though. Email or PM me for a link. It's really good.

Well, here is to hoping they work something out since Fox perpetuity has the rights to A New Hope. At least the other films revert to LucasFilm in 2020.
  • They'll work it out. Fox has a price; they know Disney NEEDS those films. They stand to make more money right now (and spike their stock hard) than they ever will holding onto that IP.
  • We already knew that though.
I'm pretty sure people here tried to argue the toss when I bought it up, around the time Lucas supposedly retired from filmmaking.
  • All the hate around Lucas is purely around disagreements over changes/additions/etc. he's made to Star Wars. Every time I've seen him interviewed, he has always come off as a pretty decent human being and a really nice guy overall.

I remember seeing him in an interview with Gene Roddenberry's (i.e. the creator of Star Trek) son as part of a documentary on Roddenberry's life. Now, the old Star Wars vs. Star Trek battle is probably one of the oldest flame wars in sci-fi nerddom. However, Lucas was very polite to Gene's son and even went so far to say that Star Trek was very good on its own merits, that both appealed to a different sort of science fiction fan, and that the two are different enough that they shouldn't be any sort of animosity between fans of both properties (FWIW, Roddenberry said the same thing about Star Wars when he was alive and even admitted to enjoying it immensely himself).

I never thought be has a bad guy. I always thought he was pretty okay. I'm glad he is a philanthropist. He just seemed stubborn in his refusal to release old art, and I disagreed with some of his artistic choices. I can separate the art from the artist.

I kind of want Disney to get the rights of Firefly from Fox, now that Disney kind of has a strong connection to Joss Whedon.
  • Yeah, I think the Trek vs Wars "flamewar" to be mostly a myth. The two franchises aim to accomplish entirely different things. The only reason people attempt to compare them so frequently is that their names both start with "Star."
  • I am not sure I would say myth as much as exaggerated to the point that most representations of said fans are caricatures of how they truly were.
  • I have never actually seen people argue Trek v Wars. I've been told it was commonplace in the late 70s and early 80s, but have no evidence to support this.
  • The only Trek vs Wars I know of is in the form of "Could the Enterprise beat a Star Destroyer?"

    (The answer is no.)
  • Sorry was that a typo :P

Nope - The advantage is that Star Wars ships are not really bound by any sort of even vaguely realistic physics, but we still have means to measure their output. Whereas Star Trek technical manuals lay out the ships capabilities in detail, and those capabilities are simply outclassed by the less reality-bound ships in Star Wars.

Star Trek ships may be based on reality, but they are still fucking stupid. In battle, they just stand still and shoot back and forth! Just because you are in 0G doesn't mean you can't move while shooting.

Not all of them do. The Klingon Birds of Prey move around like crazy.
