GeekNights Wednesday - Anime we're not watching

edited April 2013 in GeekNights

Tonight on GeekNights, we talk about some anime we knew of, but never bothered to watch, as well as anime we watched for a while, but then stopped. From the shounen fighting shows that had a few good starting episodes following by neverending fights (Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Yuyu Hakusho, etc...) to the crappy knockoff TV show reboots of otherwise good shows (El Hazard: The Wanderers, Tenchi TV, Lodoss), from shows we straight ignored despite being constantly talked about (Nadesico) to those we watched more than half of before just stopping (Ergo Proxy, Kaze no Yojimbo). Some shows just aren't worth watching (until you're old and have nothing better to do: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, GaoGaiGar). Before that, Rym gives a more detailed review of Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World), which is basically a psychic 1984, and Monaco is real and playable!

  • Pretty sure that Alice video has been a thing of a day before.
  • It has, though I can't remember the exact show.
  • I like that guy's watermelon technique. Those horizontal cuts were so fluid.

For a second, I thought the "Alice" in the shownotes was the fucking reprehensible and garbage Monkey Punch OAV from the 80s. That thing is so shitty, it is a work of power.

  • LOGH is worth watching now. I mean Rubin did watch all of Galaxy Express 999...
  • edited April 2013
I'm listening the show and I'm wondering if I heard right. Did Scott "If you care about spoilers you are stupid" Rubin, just say that there is no need to watch a show because Rym "spoiled" some parts of anime's plot?

I'm pretty sure that the "In this stealth game you don't need to start over if you are seen" was said about Mark of the ninja and Dishonored and pretty much every stealth game ever. I'm pretty sure there are more stealth games where you still have options after you are seen, than those where you are forced to start over.

  • You guys reminded me of Coyote Ragtime Show.

  • I clicked through that randomly and caught someone getting a rocket that actually hit them dead on. Would watch again at that point.
  • I'm of that age now to where I can no longer watch long series of anime.

Jeremy and I were watching FMA: Brotherhood, but we stopped. We'll get back to it eventually.

Still haven't finished Haruhi. I tried watching Spice & Wolf and found it extremely boring. I own Baccano and haven't even watched the first episode.

I find myself preferring to watch anime moves > series. It's less of a time commitment.

Nadesico was just a silly version of Eva with all the fan service. However, I will say that I enjoyed a few parts of that show.

I'm honestly thinking of getting rid of series I own that I will probably never watch again like Ergo Proxy and the like.

You don't need to watch Slayers Try, but if you're in the mood for more new Slayers, it's worth a go. I still haven't watched the newer Slayers either.
  • I tried to get a few friends who are newer to anime to watch Golden Boy as a goof. It was hilarious watching their responses to it. It certainly does belong to the VHS era of anime.
  • Also probably the only great thing to come out of Nadesico.

    Nadesico x Evangelion

  • I clicked through that randomly and caught someone getting a rocket that actually hit them dead on. Would watch again at that point.
I wont deny that Mister has a kickass reveal, but the show as a whole is kinda average. It's an Almost/Barely Recommend kind of anime that's only really worth one watch at best.

Watch it if you get trapped without Internet in the middle of nowhere with no friends and nothing else to do.
  • Pretty much exactly that. I was stuck without internet one summer and all I had was that, Black Blood Brothers, and LOGH. All three were finished inside a week.

Forever locked in a prison of Kenshiro and Gaseraki.

For what it must be to be forever already dead of boredom?

Can't say, I love me some Nadesico, GaoGaiGar, Fumoffu, etc.

  • I sympathized with this podcast, because I drop 80%+ of the anime series and books that I start (let alone western shows; I try to watch every major new animated series that comes out, but I'll carry 2-3 shows at a time at most.) Now that life is busy, the internet provides endless things to learn about, and I have a huge backlog of great shows I could rewatch, I need a new show to be either intellectually or emotionally challenging. A pretty good action show with ok characters just isn't going to get it done.
  • Wolf's rain last 5 episodes made up for the ENTIRE series for me. It literally catapulted it from "this anime is alright", to one of my favourite anime of all time. It's a terrible shame that most people did not even get to WATCH those 5 episodes at first. They had to release them as OVA addons due to the SARS epidemic at the time interrupting with progress.

I do recommend at least finishing wolf's rain just to experience that.

@Nissl, I still unconsciously read everything you say in Big Mac's voice. A new show that is both intellectually smart about itself, its world building, and its characters, while remaining a mecha action piece, would be Suisei no Gargantia. If you don't know about it already do give it a try.

As for emotionally challenging, I just finished Sound of the Sky. It had its ups and downs, but is one of the few anime, despite sometimes falling into the whole moe pandering for an episode or two, that takes a hard, intellectual, and realistic look at humanity's twilight period after an apocalypse.

Think Haibane Renmei, but with more overt overtones of wars, and the occasional moe pandering (since you gotta keep them otakus happy...)

  • I'm past the halfway point with Shin Sekai Yori. It's good watching and only getting better.

I actually think Rym may...find something to like in Sound of the Sky. It's premise of a new society after a previous disastrous event is similar, although replace the whole 1984 thing with Haibane Renmei, a world that will probably never recover and humans heading for extinction.

I think i'll try From the New World myself soon, since I found something to enjoy in song of the sky. Though I am personally not a fan of psychic powers in anime.

  • It's less 1984 and more Brave New World / Harrison Bergeron at this point.
  • Publix is actual half normal grocery store, half vegan/organic place. Their bakery is pretty good, if anything for the fact that you can order something baked on the spot.

Publix also has some of the best employee amenities/care, worked there for years.
  • I hope you are right about Wolf's Rain, I'm watching it now after being a hater for year because of the amount of people recommending that show lately, and after a few eps of the TV show it's ok and not great.. but 25 eps to get to a worthwhile part is tough in my adulthood.

I have, in fact, watched all of the Slayers shows and, I think, all of the movies; they were all enjoyable throughout. I even watched Lost Universe, which I also feel is worthwhile.

I suspect that the kids that grew up watching it on adult swim just hit college age or something. I watched it as it came out, and it was rather slow and for the most part repetitive. It did have a point, but it could have been covered in an OAV or 13 episode season just as well.

  • To answer the question of "what shows have you stopped watching partially into its run," my list would be Heroes, The Walking Dead, Weeds, Big Love, Todd & the Book of Pure Evil. All of these shows wore me out and I couldn't do it anymore. There are also some shows where I've taken a break at the end of a season and need to get back. Right now I've yet to start seasons 3 of Archer and MLP, or season 2 of Adventure Time, but there are all shows I still enjoy and know I'll get to them all eventually.

Also, even though I consider shows such as Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, etc., as some of my favorite shows of all time, I've never watched them consistently. Perhaps b/c I never had a DVR when I was at peak fandom of these shows? I did some shotgunning of Simpsons and Futurama on DVD back in college, but I couldn't be bothered to keep current with the last few seasons of Futurama after its return.
  • @lifecircle: Heh, interesting to read that you hear Big Mac whenever you see my posts. Anyway, yep, I'm watching Gargantia and enjoying it so far (haven't caught this weekend's episode yet.) I'd recommend Hataraku Maou-Sama back to you, as well as Little Witch Academia, although I'm guessing most here have checked it out already.
  • I know we've been over this a couple of times, but I really think you should continue reading One Piece, Scott. You don't have to buy the volumes, just read it on some site like MangaFox or something. While it has its ups and downs, the overall trend of it is always up and there is a big reason why this thing is so popular in japan and overall in the world.

I also find it kind of weird how you guys talked about shonen fighting shows, but didn't mention Hajime no Ippo, if which you read and watched all of what was available to you at one point, which is now more than a thousand chapters of manga worth.
  • I've watched all of the Hajime no Ippo and read almost all of it. I wonder how many chapters I have missed. I should catch up on it.

That being said, not going to read all of One Piece. I have one life to live, and that's just too much damn time of it to spend on one thing. Make an edited version where fights are shortened, and maybe I'll do it.

Started watching Shin Sekai Yori. I'm on episode 11. The animation fluctuates, but seems to be on a downward trend. Lots of talking, closeups, shots of scenery, etc. I think the first few episodes were the most interesting. At this point, there don't seem to be anymore flashbacks to history. I'll keep going for a few more episodes, at least.

Turns out the manga was a lot porn-ier than the anime. Actually, the anime handles the sexuality extremely tastefully, with a couple of make-out shots, and very light petting. This is as opposed to the manga which dedicated 6-8 pages entirely to softcore yuri. Not to mention the highly sexualized outfits in the manga. It's like a 13 year old directed the manga, and an adult managed to steal the job for the anime.
