    The problem is that ACPI support in pretty much anything that's not Windows or OS X is godawful. Yes, theoretically it can be added, but it's non-trivial.
  • It's Linux's fault for having bad support for ACPI even after all these years. Valve can't be spending their time to work on that shit. I'm surprised they aren't having issues with audio.
  • 100% they'll run into audio problems with cards not integrated on motherboards.
    I think Linux is great as a developer environment, backup, work and power user but it just is not well suited at the moment for entertainment and an after work computer that just works without you fiddling with it.

    Yet at the same time I'm in earshot of kids talking about how mediocre Windows 10 is.

    I don't care what OS you're talking about, I give high regard to the programmers who code any OS. The thing is way more complex than I thought a program could be.
  • I still really only care about Steam OS because I hope it makes more developers port their games to Linux
  • Some Ars Technica staff compared SteamOS with Windows 10.

    The result? Embarrassing.

    It's not the OS's fault. For almost all real gaming everything that counts is in the graphics drivers. Obviously NVidia and AMD put the most effort into the Windows drivers.

    People who are making high end PC games, and pretty much every AAA games, are in communication with the people who are working on the graphics drivers. In order to increase performance and maintain stability there is a lot of really janky and specific code both in the games and in the drivers. It goes so far that there is almost definitely code in the graphics driver that says things like

    if (game == "fallout3"){ do X to get extra frames; }

    Obviously the Linux driver doesn't get this kind of love, so it will be far far behind in terms of performance, and the only people to blame are NVidia and AMD.
