I'm saddened.... (Board games)

  • Would you put Impulse above or below Glory to Rome, and why?

Hard to say, because I don't have enough experience with Impulse (only 3 games to GtR's 25+). If you put them both in front of me right now I'd choose Impulse with 2 players, and GtR with 3-4.

Asmadi just announced a bunch of new Chudyk designs - two Innovation expansions, two Impulse expansions, and a new Glory to Rome successor (ala Uchronia) called Mottainai that fits on 54 cards.
  • According to that BGG page for Mottainai, there will be a print-and-play beta test posted late tonight if people are really eager to see the game.
  • I will print it, so we can play it.
  • There's a new printing of Tumblin' Dice on Kickstarter, lightweight enough to fit in a bag or luggage without being a pain in the ass.

Jay Tummelson also announced an expansion for Roll for the Galaxy as a fall release.
  • The slow-mo dice rolling in that Tumblin' Dice video is pure porn.
  • I didn't realize that this was a more compact version. I've always had it on my list of games to maybe pick up one day, but that box is huge, and I don't have much more room for huge-box games in my office. I'm gonna have to get the dimensions on this smaller box. It might get purchased.
  • Yeah, I'm grabbing a copy for the nerd retirement home, it'll be easier to move.
  • Tumblin' Dice box dimensions will be 16.5" by 14.5" by 2"
My Expedit shelving is a series of 13.25" squares, except for one double-wide where I left the divider out for long-box games, and the area along the top, where I have about 5" of clearance to the ceiling. Most of that space is taken up though. Will have to give this some thought.
  • Finally got to play Chaos in the Old World. Great asymetric area control game. Love how the four Chaos factions play so differently.
  • npr.org/blogs/money/2015/03/11/392381112/episode-609-the-curse-of-the-black-lotus
Planet Money did a need segment on the business of Magic. How they avoided the bubble and reigned in collectors.
  • Warning: really awesome dice.

I have played these games and can confirm this is legit and worth having.

I helpled playtest a bunch of the games/puzzles in this Kickstarter. The games are a lot of fun and the dice are just gorgeous and great just to hold in your hand, roll around, or just display somewhere. Also, Matthew, the designer is a really great guy.

  • I now own two sets of these:

  • Official online version of Pandante just launched, and is free. Plays by second edition rules, but with no expansion content. You guys should set up a GeekNights game and stream it. I'd be down.
  • My board games are at @Cremlian place for the foreseeable future...should be in good hands as I move.
  • I made it to my Wednesday night game group last night and got to play Roll for the Galaxy. I was very impressed.

It does not feel like a deckbuilding/dicebuilding game at all. It feels like that is just one small mechanism in a larger, more interesting machine. The dice allocation system is very well designed, and leaves you making several tough decisions on your turn. At the same time, what your opponents are doing also matters, so you do need to pay attention to everyone. Feels like a deeper game than it really is, and it wraps up in 60min or less, before the shine comes off. Very well done.

I also got to play Machi Koro. The little bit of public opinion I'd hear on this one is correct: the game is not worth playing until you can add in expansion content. It's a lot of "roll the dice on your turn, make the obvious move," but the expansion cards add enough to make you think a little bit about how you want to go about winning. It's a 30min card game with absolutely gorgeous art. They are re-releasing it as a single game with the current expansion and an upcoming expansion all rolled in, so I will consider whether I should pick it up at that point. It's a pass for now.
  • I feel pretty much exactly the same as you do regarding both Roll through the Galaxy and Machi Koro.

While I admire the design of Race for the Galaxy, I've never really enjoyed the game. Roll just seems so much simpler, yet at the same time, gives you all kinds of options to play on your turn. I really enjoy it, and, like you wrote, it doesn't overstay its welcome. I'm curious what they're going to do in the planned expansion, but hope that the game doesn't suffer the bloat that Race did with all its expansions.

Machi Koro is a fun, light Catan meets Dominion game with gorgeous artwork. I've only played it once with the Harbor expansion, but it was much better. What's the upcoming expansion?
  • Roll for the Galaxy is my favorite new game from 2015. I say that as a person who loves Race for the Galaxy and all of its expansions.

Alchemists is the only recent game that might challenge it. Using logic puzzles as a game mechanic - and actually building a fun and interesting game around it.
  • Yeah, I backed the Pandante kickstarter for the expansion.
  • and now Sirlin is ~50k down.
  • Played Manhattan Project with pence and Cremelian last night. As worker placement games go I like it. The head of Tabletop at Zenkaikon loaned/gave me the game for a year, to see if I like it. I always dig art deco and my collection doesn't have a proper worker placement game.

BTW figured out what was up with the game missing two cards. There were 2 university cards that had misprinted backs. They were 1 worker for 1 Scientist and 1 worker for 1 Engineer respectively. I had the 1 worker for 1 Scientist card, so the cards are present in the game.

I contacted the game manufacturer to see about replacement cards, but I may decide to buy the most current printing anyways.
  • I warmed up to it after a slow start. Airstrikes are a big deal but the designer wants dealmaking and politics in the game, which is the primary thing differentiating it from a less political (but otherwise similar) game like Euphoria. I'd put it on the same level as Euphoria (ie. pretty fun).

It beats the hell out of other Kickstarter worker placement games.

It's also no Caylus, but if you want early 20th century worker placement it's the only game in town. ;P
  • I am really not a fan of Manhattan Project. So many of the turns were autopilot - grab airstrikes, bomb the leader.
  • Well our game of Manhattan project was funny because one player bought all the aircraft producing buildings and in the late game decided not to attack anyone.....
  • I'm about halfway through a Risk: Legacy campaign. I still hate Risk, but all the changes to the game/board/rules are super awesome and fun. I'm looking forward to Pandemic: Legacy, a game I enjoy somewhat more than Risk, where I think the legacy elements will really add to the game, and the designer's first originial game, Seafall.

Even if you don't like Risk, like me, Risk: Legacy is still fun just for all the crazy shit you can do in it.
  • I remember that there was a discussion at some point for playing Risk Legacy with FRC PAX attendees... Not sure how it would best work since only a few of us go to more than one or two per year,
  • Splendor Game Tray Gonna buy this, probably.

There was a copy of Risk Legacy in the TT library for 3 or 4 years. Sadly it must have gotten culled at Prime 2014. You can change up the players in each round. It's not ideal but the game still works, and that copy had 8 or 9 sessions recorded on it.
